What is a Butterfly knife used for?

Actually they are thought of as awesome knives by the gangs that I know. No, I am not a gangmember but i happen to have a few friends who are actually considered "gangbangers", they think that things like screwdrivers, brass knuckles, and bats are better to use if needed. They dont care about losing them or quickly tossing them away. I am the only one who I know of any of my friends who can use one and manipulate a bali. They prefer S&W type autos or manuals.

I read something about laws banning types of weapons never work, but laws banning certain behavior with weapons did.
