What is a "friend request"?

i just got a notice that someone wants to be my friend on here.

what is that all about. I dont know anything about this and i've been on here a number of years. is this a new feature? or is it that no one has wanted to be my friend all these years?

It's sorta strange to get a "friend" request, when you don't even know the person. Only time I got one was from a member trying to trade me out of a knife he saw I'd just acquired and he wanted. So, he was just trying to butter me up.

"Friends" show up on your profile. it is a new feature but it's not primarily about liking each other, it's for easier contact. When you're on each others' friend's lists, you just go to your own profile and click on their name/avatar to get in touch with them, instead of hunting all over the forums to find them.

So if someone is interested in holding regular conversations with you on the side, it works, or if they need to contact you frequently about buying/selling/trading.
