What is a good all around knife for camping and hiking?

He should check out swamprat knives, They are under $200.00.
The Ratmandu is an awesome knife.

One knife , easy to maintain and can do a lot of stuff is the BK 7. Other options would be a Fallkniven S1 or A1 for a stainless. Even an SRK is a good all arounder. I have an Aus8 model that works great as a one knife scenario.I beat on it hard and it hasn't failed yet and easy to sharpen.Lots of other choices too. I name these because for one knife only, I think the 5-7" range is more versatile than just a 4" knife , although a lot of people are good with that length. Depends on what he likes I guess.

Thank you all for the great suggestions.

My buddy just called me today to inform me that he decided to save some money to get a new backpack and just ordered himself from amazon a Kabar short plain edge. I have a BK-2 and Bk-11 myself and love them both, but I'm not too familiar with the other Kabar knives. I hope he got a good knife. Again thank you everyone for all your suggestions.

The short Kabar wouldn't be near the top of my list and what the heck I might as well call it a bad choice! He'd be better off with a $15 Mora.

I love the full size USMC Kabar after the top guard is ground off. If the short Kabar was a 5" version of the full size I'd probably like it but the short is just a mini that doesn't cut well. But I hope he likes it!

I think that an ESEE-6 or a BK-7 would be a great choice, but I really do hate the idea of only having 1 knife. How about a Victorinox Farmer as well as whichever knife he gets? Sometimes you want a small knife for certain tasks.

Before my 'enlightenment', I was happy with a Buck 110 in my pocket when I hiked and camped. Strickly camping, my Dad's old WWII friend - a KaBar - was plenty. More recently, a Buck 192 Vanguard and Buck 119 'Special', a $34 knife at WallyWorld, have been more than enough. Knowing how to use what you have is important.

Best advise you could have given him was to read Blade Forums (LOL)
Inparticular this thread.

No disrespect to his choice, but for $10 or $15 more he could have had a lot
more knife. Benchmade Pardue Rant for example, 440C for about $50.

BK2 for about $50. Etc. etc. etc.

Maybe he needs 2 knives :D He starts reading this board, he'll have a couple three.

RAT Cutlery (ESEE) RC6 would be a very good choice. For $112 its a hell of a knife. Comes with a no questions asked lifetime warranty.

I'm sorry but that last comment kind of pissed me off. (You can break it on purpose and they will replace it).

That would be pretty screwed up for someone to do that.
It ticks me off too but it happens. That is what I have read. I use my knife for their purpose and crow bars for their purpose.
If you are mad at me then oh well. You'll get over it.
