If I were scraping mortar with a knife ( I assume after it has hardened) That is some rugged use. I personally would not use a folder. I think that's just asking for trouble. Get a small fixed blade like a Rat Izula. You can even wear it around your neck.

Just my opinion.

yeha i would suggest a small fixed also. then you dont have to worry about it breaking. and how much money do u want to spend? a lot of 'hard use' folders are going to run you a pretty penny. you could consider a busse game warden or active duty which i believe can be had in the 200-250 range which is about the same as some like a zero tolerance 30x, and less than something like a crk or strider.

Maybe consider the Crkt Folding Razel. It seems it would be pretty good at scraping and prying. The people who have them feel they are tough well built tools. Not a conventional blade, but might do all you need it to for a reasonable price. Good luck!

If you must scrape mortar with a knife, I would choose a fixed blade over a folder. Why not use something else though? Knives are meant to cut, not scrape. You'd have to shell out a pretty penny to get a knife that will stand up to such use and then you'd be using that expensive knife to do do something it's not designed for. Kind of like buying a Ferrari to tow a trailer. Yeah it has the power, but so does a $5000 second hand Ford. Rough analogy but you get the idea. Doesn't make sense to me

For scraping mortar, I'd get a $1.99 utility knife or a putty knife.

For hard cutting tasks, I love my ZT0500.

Another no on using a knife.

Get him the Breacher Bar from County Comm. It is made for abusing tasks.

Cheap , very effective and cool looking to boot.

This is the one case where I would recommend a combo edge Endura or delica.

GET A KERSHAW JYDII!

(Or G-10 Tyrade if you can find one.)

Composite blade is better, regular 14C28N (or 13C26) would work pretty good too. You get much better edge retention with the Composite blade.
I've cut sheet metal, scraped crap off and out of all sorts of machinery, stabbed the blade into very tight spaces (no prying, that'll do you in pretty quick).
The lock is still tight and barely worn.
Not that all that stuff is recommended knife use, but if you want a good beater knife I can't think of anything better.
(Besides a good fixed blade.)

Get the cheapest knife you can with good steel, fixed or folding, doesn't matter.

I say get a mora or two.

It's just construction guys, he's not looking for a real hard user.

I'd say a cheap full tang paring knife would fit the bill just as well.
