what is a good hard use folder

GET A KERSHAW JYDII!

(Or G-10 Tyrade if you can find one.)

Composite blade is better, regular 14C28N (or 13C26) would work pretty good too. You get much better edge retention with the Composite blade.
I've cut sheet metal, scraped crap off and out of all sorts of machinery, stabbed the blade into very tight spaces (no prying, that'll do you in pretty quick).
The lock is still tight and barely worn.
Not that all that stuff is recommended knife use, but if you want a good beater knife I can't think of anything better.
(Besides a good fixed blade.)

This.

Or a ZT of any flavor.

I do commercial construction in high-rise towers. My solution to what you need is whatever Walmart has on sale(Kershaw, Gerber?). Really, not being flip, just an answer from experience.

If all you need is a strap slicer, get a full serrated, otherwise a plain edge because you will end up sharpening it often and it will work better for most things.

If the company is buying it, get the best. If not, get the cheapest one that works.

Fixed utility knife maybe? It's what I use every day, all day, for every cutting task. For mortar I just use my lath hatchet.:D

A strong and solid hard-use folder that I would recommend would be a Kershaw Lahar. No too expensive and not too cheap. You can get one for less than $60(US). It has nice thick flat-ground VG-10 steel, G-10 handle scales, thick steel liners and a strong liner lock. It is bulky no doubt but fits the hand nicely. Check it out.

It is the knife I often carry when doing yard work or do-it-yourself projects around the house. But I'd never scrape mortar with it or any of my knives. I have a "SuperKnife" w/ replaceable blades for that.

I carry a ZT MUDD for hard use, and it has held up very well. If you need to scrape something, just flip the knife over and use the spine. Wear gloves!

thank you everyone. my major problem with a fixed blade is im a full time student and fixed blades are weird to sit with i think i might be puting them in my pocket wrong but idk. im not sure if that would change any recomendations sorry

Another vote for a CRKT folding or fixed Razel:

I would suggest an Ontario RAT-1 for about $25. It is made pretty strong and tough and for the price you wouldn't be that upset if you broke it.

CS Voyagers are tough and good bang for the buck. Wouldn't use 'em for scraping stuff, tho'... use the right tool for the job.

For construction, I'd get a Spyderco Endura or Native. Inexpensive, high quality, great materials, awesome warranty, easy to use with gloves on.
