What Is a Good Hunting Knife??

Entrek Javalina.

440C, "grippy" Micarta scales, 4 inch blade. Drop point with a nice belly.
Custom quality.
IMHO, this is really a great knife and very under-represented.

Easily available for about $100.

For those a little less willing to try something so rarely mentioned, the Cold Steel Master Hunter is definitely a winner at the street price of about $65.

Though I am attached to my good old Buck Big Sky when deer hunting, there are several I agree with many that are mentioned already: Cold Steel Master Hunter, Marbles Woodcraft , Grohmann #1. I would also look at the Ontario RAT 3, or TAK.

Two I like are the Spyderco Bill Moran Drop Point (List-$105) and the Cabelas/Buck Pro-Line Vanguard isn't bad either.

There are alot of good knives out there. Buying a knife is akin to buying a new vehicle or clothing. Try it on and get the feel for it

Check the handle. It should be large enough to fill and provide a positive grip. Small handles can be cumbersome and tiring during use. Small handles when wet with blood while gutting are a pain.

Blade size and style is a personal choice, but I would go with a blade of about 5 inches. Big blades do have their purpose, but again they are cumbersome. For that reason I carry large and small, to get the work done.

If the knife feels right to you, then it is probably the right choice.

Bark River Highland would be a good choice in your price range. So would the Cabelas Alaskan Guide Series Buck Vanguard.

I like the Western 36 hunting knife, flat ground carbon steel, nearly 1/4 inch blade, $25-35 on ebay
