what is a good knife to give a 12 year old boy?

Eight pages of ideas & discussion. It would be nice to find out if we were any help & what if anything she got.

My first knife was a speyderco persistence they are relatively cheap ($30) and they can take beating. I got it when I was 8 and still have it at 13. No out the front knives or beastly fixed blades for a first time knife owner they take some getting used to. After the first knife it's a addiction that can't be quenched. Lol!

I don't blame her. She just wanted suggestions and we (me included) took it WAAAAAAAAAY out of hand, at least for someone like her who is not a knife person.

I don't blame her either, and I think she probably has a few knives in mind right now.

Ask him. Then check it on the inter-webs.You can probably rule out combat or large pig-stickers
something in the 3-4" range is a manageable blade length for most everyday purposes.
My first knife other than a Boy Scout utility folder was a Case Sod-buster

What is your budget first of all, that will influence what advice you get.

Others have said an Opinel. This is a fantastic knife for very little money. You can get a fancy stainless polished blade and premium wood like the Bubbingna wood version for $23 or so. It will be the best slicing, handiest knife he will ever have. It does not snap open or closed (size #8 would be the size they come in. 3 1/4 inch blade. Not scary. Strong and light.

Different answers for a higher budget. But I will say I have a custom pocket knife worth more than $500, an many production folders in the $100 plus price range, and I always carry an Opinel in addition to those.

If you are thinking fixed blade for camping, then the answer would obviously be different.

The question of "what is a good knife" also needs input like where he will be using it, and what for, in order to make a more targeted recommendation.

If you want a more traditional knife, with a non locking blade, look at GEC's. Something like the Scout Boys knife (#15 pattern), it will be a perfect size for that age to carry. Non threatening, and with the easy open, he should have no problems opening it.

Not many mothers would choose that moniker.
It wouldn't surprise me if the OP were trolling to create argument. Just for fun, or a journalist writing an article.

An el cheapo so not if but when he loses it it won't be a lifetime of regret like when I lost my grandfather's knife made in the early 1900's he carried through a war and Great Depression.
Knives are like boyhood crushes, they will some day be a vague memory.

I haven't read all of the replies in the thread and you probably already gave him a knife for Christmas, but if you haven't I vote for a Buck 110. I got one around that age and so did both of my sons (at 10-12 years old)
