What is a jacknife? plus a bit of vindication

Dude its your daughter. Get her a brand new Case or something she can enjoy breaking in on her own

I 100% agree. She isn't going to like that Opinel you picked out for her. Go to Walmart and pick her up something a little girl would like.

While I hesitate to down your choice of knife, I agree that you should take her to some knife store, and have her pick something.

That's what I'll be doing with my niece in a couple of years.

The Opinel sounds like a good choice to me, considering the circumstances and what it's going to be used for.

BTW, here's something I found about the term "jackknife". The word has a pretty interesting history.

When I get her something it will be girly and fitting of a girl her age.

The Opinel is just something I had that locks that I had on hand. It is only an interim knife. I will be buying her something new in the future.

The wife doesn't approve so I meight end up doing an end around and buying myself something suitable that she can use.

I would like something bigger than a SAK classic. I have owned those and I work with fellows that carry them. They always seem like a toy to me. I would like to get her a tool that she can learn with rather than a toy.

Our cutlery stores are few and far between around here. We used to have Cutlery Corner in all the malls.

It will be Cabela's, Fleet Farm, Gander Mountain or some such store.
