What IS a model 43???

Where do you get BARs? While I'm at it, how about a Garand? Hey, I could give you my 18in WW2 for a BAR! :D

Bruise,

That was awesome! I just split a gut again.

Only having used one 15" AK at present, I cna't make any solid recommendations except you seem like a fairly large fellow, so a medium-sized knife would not be inordinate given the descriptions on Uncle Bill's website.

Trying to relate it to the '06/.308 non-dilemma:

I now own a Remington Model 7 in .308. It is blued with the Remington plastic stock that comes on the stainless model, iron sights and a Leupold M8 4x Compact Scope and Leupold mount. The whole rig with sling weighs 7lbs soaking wet. I like to travel light, and shaving 2-3 pounds off a rifle while losing almost nothing in ballistics appeals to me. Floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. A pretty little rifle with decent punch and accuracy.

So likewise, maybe the 18" WWII is a nice compromise between weight and chopping power? Just a thought.

A nice combination of power and accuracy is the .300 Win Mag. I gather that U.S. Army competitors routinely use this round for long range match accuracy. It is also powerful enough to take anything on this continent. Not that the .308 or .30-06 haven't already done that. It is way more about where you hit them than how.

A .75 caliber wad of toilet paper, soaked in Bruise's spit, would probably make most animals keel over out of sheer revulsion. You might have to get a bit closer though.:D

anything soaked in Bruise's spit would make animals keel over out of sheer revulsion.:)

Ya ever seen a breath mint commit suicide? Lots of things consider self-immolation, rather than endure Bruises salivation. (hee ehe)

It's not the kind of BAR you're thinking of, Skeletor. I believe he's referring to the semi-auto hunting rifle of the same name. Made in Japan, IIRC.

Re: the Garand, the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) would be happy to sell you one. (I actually think it's called something else these days, but they still are around. It's a federal government outfit.)

Typically, you have to take a certification course. (These range anywhere from one to many days. Don't worry. The two that I've done both had lots of range time.) The VA Shooting Sports Association puts these on from time to time, IIRC. You could also check the NRA website - they are usually very willing to provide info about shooting-related events in your area. If you're military, you can probably skip the course - I don't recall the rules on that subject.

Once you've got your certification or other proof, send it to the DCM along with the required DCM paperwork. They will charge you $400 (this may have gone up) for the Garand, and you'll have to wait 6-12 months to get it. But, you'll get one that's been arsenal-reconditioned and in government storage.

Of course you could dispense with all of that and take $600+ to your next gun show and take your chances with what you get. It may be a hunk of junk, or a good, working rifle.

We have had a biker convention going on all week in Reno called Street Vibrations. I have nothing against bikers since I used to be one myself but I've had more than my fill of 40,000 bikers roaring up and down the streets of Reno 24 hours per day. Therefore, I'm looking for a good used 50 calibre machine gun and 40,000 rounds of ammo.

For sale: Well used set of Buddhist credentials.

I grew up hearing my grandpa (who was a prize fighter during the depression) ALWAYS griping about the "sickle bums." :D He had a point.

Fulton armory is a little expensive. You can get a good shooter from 400 to 600, if you don't mind mixed parts. Matching serial numbers cost more. My current pricing may be optimistic as I've dropped out of the market.

I've owned 4 of the damned things. Like the SKS, I get rid of them, only to feel a void in my life....

There are new manufacture Garrands that appear to be well done. I believe they are cast recievers, which is OK, but who doesn't like the sound of 'forged?"
But I'm tough now, I own no Garrand or SKS!! Course...there's the M1A, the AR, AK, and M1 carbine....

Mel Bishop out of Sturgis, South Dakota, is a top flight dealer of M1 Garands. He is also less expensive than either Fulton or Orion. He sold my dad a pristine Springfield M1A (receiver made 1943; barrel put on, I believe, in 1950) for about $800. This thing looked about as new as it gets. My dad bought a bunch of accessories with it, including an original bayonet (which came packaged in the original brown bag). His total out of pocket on this rig did not exceed $1,000. I was amazed. You will pay that for one of the new Springfield M1 Garands that are currently being made with receivers that are either (a) forged in Italy or (b) cast. My dad got the original, and it is a beauty. It is the most pleasurable rifle I have ever shot. We decided to go this route instead of taking our chances with possibly getting something not-so-nice through the CMP. We heard that all the choice pieces have been snatched up from the CMP in the last couple of years.

that is excellent to know. CMP is a system of humans, so it woudn't surprise me many 'cherries' are already gone. I remember glowing specimens in plastic bags for less than 300 from them.

We simple send a half dozen grizzly bears and say, a dozen black bears, Give them ALL BARS, and send them down Main street to the er, bars.

We'd have BAR-toting bears busting biker bars.

(I think the new meds are a little strong. I should go.)
