What is a Sarki? Answer . . . . .

I found in my trip notes the word "Sarki" and thought I'd share it with the group. A Sarki, in the khukuri making world, is the term used for a person who makes the sheaths. Sarki is a caste like Kami. So, when we refer to he that makes a sheath, it would be appropriate to call him a sarki. And just to confuse things, as is the case with the bishwakarmas, their names all seem to end in "Sarki" for the most part (i.e. Rambahadur Sarki, one of TBs sarkis).

Craig, you informed us in an earlier post that kamis do not like to be referred to as kamis. Does the same hold true for sarkis? Is the title in any way considered demeaning?

Well, I'm not sure, but logic would tell us "yes." Of course, I got an email from a VERY informed customer about this, who said (he asked to remain anonymous) that Kami CAN but is not always used as a negative term. It all depends on the context. So, I guess unless you are actually visiting the kamis/bishwakarmas, you can call them whatever you like. I only choose to use bishwakarma because I don't want to put my foot in my mouth trying to remember two sets of names!

Yes, I recieved an interesting E-Mail on that one. Kami Sherpa said,"Well, I guess I`ll have to change my name."

FNG: Who exactly is Kami Sherpa (he certainly has a good sense of humor)? I guess TB doesn't have to change his name
