What is a slipjoint?

Just new to knife discussions I guess, but what is a slipjoint? Is it a normal folding knife that doen't lock somehow? Please help a newbie.

You've got it. The spring sits in a square cut out in the back of the tang. The pressure of the spring holds it in place, but enough pressure will let the blade fold back to the closed position. Think Swiss Army style folder.
