What is a small and large folder to you?

I generally go by my local legal blade length, which is 3.5 inches

Anything under that, I consider it small, anything larger, I consider it large.

However, I'd have to say anything over 5 inches is ridiculous

Yes, there's lots of personal preference involved and the physical size of the user, too (big hands or small hands). The feel of the handle is just as important to me as the blade length as some has stated. Thanks for all your posts. :D

This is totally a personal preference, but for me:

3" blade or less is a small folder
3"-3.5" is a mid-size
3.5"-4" is a large
Over 4" XL

This is essentially the same for me as a rule of thumb. When it comes to what I actually carry, 90% would fall in the small range, and 10% medium.

Small:
Kershaw: Chive, Leek, Skyline
Spyderco: Dragonfly, Delica, Ladybug
Benchmade; Mini Grip (don't own lots of Benchmades)
CRK: Sm. Sebenza, Mnadi
Strider: PT

Large:
Spyderco: Military, Gayle Bradley, Endura
Kershaw/ZT: Scallion, 030X series
Benchmade: 710, 630, TSEK, AFCK
CRK: Umnumzaan, Lg Sebenza
Strider: SMF

It depends...

Small
Locking folders - 3" or smaller blade.
Slipjoints - Under 3 1/2" closed.

Large
Lfs - Blade over 3 1/2"
Sjs - Over 3 3/4" closed

For me.

<3" Small
3-4 Medium
4+" Large

Handle length and blade thickness also matter, but the above is my rule of thumb.

This, pretty much. Though as the other poster stated much over 4" becomes XL or jumbo, generally. I have handled an Emerson Super Commander...that was a big mother fucking knife

My ZT 0200 feels a lot bigger than my Emerson CQC-8, especially in pocket, but they are both 4". The width/thickness can make a big difference. I

As far a carrying a single knife, 4" is both for me.
The smallest I want for combination of utility and SD.
The largest I'm allowed to EDC.

I've always considered 3" the point at the which a small folder becomes a larger folder. What do you think?

I agree. I was going to say that when something has a blade length greater than 3" or an overall length greater than 7", it becomes a 'large' folder in my mind.

Blade length 2.5" and under is small
Blade length over 2.5" and up to 3.5" is medium
Blade length over 3.5" up to 4.5" is large
Blade length over 4.5" - you need a fixed blade:)
