I am a total noob to buying steel which is why I don't know this.

I'm trying to purchase some steel and I keep seeing it described as bar stock. I quick google search told me it was a bar (Makes sense right?:p) So do they really send you a big bar? Wouldn't that be hard to make into a blade? Please forgive my ignorance. Would sheet stock be the right thing for blades?

Any input is appreciated.

True Bar stock is rolled to shape either hot, or cold. Some of the stuff you will buy is bar stock, others will be sheets sheared/cut into the shape of a bar. Either way one of the most important things will be dimensions.

WxTxL As an example I just got some 1.5" (W)ide x .100" (T)hick x 36" (L)ong cpm154

Ah thank you very much. Since I'm a noob should I just stick to the sheets?

No. Plan a design, and then base what steel you use on what would fit the design. Order a bar that fits the dimensions. njsteelbaron.com has all the barstock you could ever need. Just look at the dimensions.
