What is it about the CQC-7 anyway?

When I first got into Emerson knives, the CQC-7 was to be the last on my 'buy' list. I thought that the handle to blade ratio was a bit strange, as in too much handle and too little blade. I also questioned the versatility of the American Tanto pattern. Was the tanto a practical pattern? Was the tanto any good for anything but piercing? Such questions kept me away from the sevens.

Now, as it happens, Rolf (Lycosa) is a big proponent of the CQC-7 and always has been for as far back as I can remenber. Rolf is quite the collector and has had some fine knives in hand, so when he recommended 'the seven' so many times, I eventually broke down and got one.

Usually when I get a new knife, it sees some pocket time for a bit to break it in and then one of my regulars (A-100, CQC-8) replaces it. This time however, the CQC-7B has remained in my pocket since I got it. The seven carries right, feels right in hand, is smooth as butter with a perfect lock-up and has served up fine cuts to whatever I lend it to. So I posit this question: What mystical quality(s) of the CQC-7 do you find irresitible?

Its the next on my list for Emersons, but havent been able to pull the trigger on it yet. On paper it would be the last I ever got (dont really like tanto blades, short blade, long handle with nothing to stop your hand from sliding up, etc.), but something about it is apealing to me. Almost got the super7 but went with the 8 instead. I have had pangs of regret ever since, but cant quite put my finger on why. It definitely has knife magnetism ;)

js- If you are going to thrust, use a palm-loaded grip.
Now go order one.

Mr. Lycosa has his/my CQC-7 en route to me, and I am pleased to be seeing it again. Especially in light of this thread. I think I need to give it another try.

You won't regret it, powernoodle. Rolf had to beat me upside the head a few times before I saw the light. :)

My worst self-inflicted wound was with a CQC-7, while vivisecting a cereal box. That tip is quiet dangerous in the hands of the someone who isn't paying attention to what he is doing. And I guess its quite dangerous in the hands of someone who is paying attention to what he is doing too.

I purchased a bunch of Emersons, maybe 5 or 6 years ago. And with in a couple months sold or traded them off, I was still relativity new to blade forums, and the hard line views of others knocking the Emerson product. So I thought shoot! I might as well unload them, big mistake! Funny enough, the only one I kept was a QCC7A, I put it back in its box along with others I consider give a way's.
Can't remember what I was doing a month or two back, and I dug out the 7 It has now become my favorite knife of all my edc's. I own some of the very best Spyderco's, Benchmade's, Fantoni's and yes even the Sebenza. When I hold the 7 it feels like home, I just likes it lots :p So of course, I'm in the process of building up my Emerson collection again.
Sure would be nice if I could sell off a few of my others,to subsidize my EMI purchases.

P.S. I am still a Gold member, for some reason the updating is taking a little longer than usual.

It's a small tank. Great knife! This thread is no good without pics!

Dave, for the Gold setting, try Settings > Permission Groups > and then tick 'Identify me as a member of this group' in the Gold section.

And thanks for the pic, Tony! :)

OK, I'll be the oddball. I had a satin finished CQC-7, and didn't end up keeping it. Just really didn't do anything for me. It and a plain black edge Horseman are the only Emersons that I couldn't bond with (the mini-8 was frankly a lemon that shouldn't have been shipped).

I believe Spark hasn't gotten to these yet, as there appears to be quite a few of us in the Tech and Support section, still waiting for the Gold! :D

I went to a shop with every intention of buying a 7. I held it and was disappointed, it was too small. Then I held the super 7, again disappointed cause the handle was too big. I did like the blade size though. Then I saw a pro tech cqc7. Its hard to resist the strong thwack of a pro tech, plus the blade of the 7, so I took it home. I carried it a couple weeks and wasnt really impressed so I put my umnumzaan back in the pocket. Then I went back to look at more emersons and give them another chance. I looked at a nice lineup and took the cqc15 home. Iv been in love with this knife since the second I held it and it hasnt left my pocket since. I guess its time to give the 7 another look and see what I buy this time lol.

I got a mini 7 in a trade a little bit ago and i have to say, i fell in love. It had the perfect ergos and perfect blade shape/size. I always look for handles that are filling while keeping an adequate blade size and the mini 7 fit it perfectly. I'm very happy with it. I'm already eyeing up the Gypsy Jack, i might make it an early birthday present :D

KOW, if/when you get a Gypsy Jack, let us know your impressions. I have been eyeballing one as well.

Not a fan of the chisel grind. If they made in a v grind I'd like it more

When you are a black ops team leader (like each of us in this thread), and have to spend weeks at a time surviving deep in hostile territory without support (something we can all relate to), you find that the chisel grind is easier to sharpen on a rock. Mission success is often tied to the chisel grind. Everyone knows that.

Todd- You'll have your 7 back in a few days. KEEP it! And, great post. ^ :D
I had a Mini Commander and I highly rec this folder too.
What I love about Ernest's knives is that when you grab one they just lock into your hand. You feel like you can just ram that knife through a wall.
