What is it? found this when cleaning attic

The pommel is definitely from a fraternal sword. The grip is probably not. Mostly those are "caned." This grip appears to have been leather wrapped at some point. The cross may have been repurposed from something else cheap and I wonder if the blade is not part of the same sword as the pommel but broken off. Do the etchings or engravings run off at the tip? This is not a sommelier or hunting saber. It is a composite of worthless bits and pieces, but still a fun find!
Triton very good information thanks, and it is a truly fun find and creative whoever did this

For a champagne sabre I think they have to curve.

They are, indeed. Basically similar to a dress cavalry sabre. Years ago I played for the investiture of a couple of people becoming ‘chevaliers’ of the British Champagne vintners’ guild or order, or whatever it was.

Held in cavernous and ancient cellars by the Thames, they each had to open champagne in the proscribed manner with a sabre. All that was served was champagne. The band each got given a bottle when we left. Happy times... :)
