Is it the look?

Is it the feel?

Is it the beauty of the blade?

Is it the power of the possibilities?

What is it that attracts you to knives?

I have always been fascinated with folding pocket knives mainly and certain fixed blade hunting knives secondly. Also, there is something about a boot knife. But I mainly own smaller folding knives 5" and under.

Do you sit in front of the TV opening and closing a knife? I do. I like to give equal time to my knives. I dont like stiff, unbroken in knives. I like all of my knives to be opened and closed at least a few thousand times, oil droplet now and then, carry in pocket now and then...

But I only carry designated knives that I will use. I don't carry the special ones for anything other than show or to snap open and closed. Sort of like how someone may lean up against a bar flipping a big shiny coin, but I would rather excersize a nice pocket knife. It is also nice to carry a small snappy mother of pearl smooth 2-4 blade job just for the comfort of it. Like lounging in a 2,000.00 leather barcalounger, just to do it.

My closest relationships are with the knives that have cut me. Not nessessarily my favorite knives, but there is something special about a knife that bites you because you were careless. It is almost like a teacher. It creates memories that last. And the deeper cut, the longer the memory lasts.

Yes, we must respect our knives. Knives do not like to be handled by careless hands. A knife is most comfortable in the hands of someone who is confident holding it and operating it.

A good knife holder will practice using a knife with either hand. You must be able to function your knife with either hand. If you are pinned down is a position that causes you to be forced to use your knife with the opposite hand that you are used to, you must be able to function with that hand also.

Example: You are under your sink installing a GE water purifier. You are all crinkled up half on your side and half on your back with a small mag-light in your mouth, you get to the part where you must trim 2" off of the plastic supply tube, the arm that you normally use is jammed between cans of ajax, lemon floor cleaner, comet, old english & numerous rags, towels & SOS pads, both used and unused....and the dishwasher and garbage disposal hoses are in the way.

OK, you must use the opposite hand to get your knife out of your pocket that you are laying on, and then you have to open it with that lame hand and try to function with it properly. If you make the wrong move, you could easily cause a memory to happen.

It is good to practice using either hand.

I'll learn eventually, just hold still, and don't move the apple.

It is for most of those reasons and a few others that I love knives.
I love custom knives because they let me see a little bit of the soul of the man who made the knife. The attention to fine detail and the creativity of the maker are other things that attract me to custom knives.
Do I worry about whether I can use it equally well with both hands? No.
Do I sit in front of my TV opening and closing my knife? Sometimes.
I love having a good knife with me because it is good to know that if the situation arrises you will have the tool to do the job.

One more thing....

It is interesting to hear why each of us is attracted to Knives. I believe that a knife was the first innovative weapon, after the rock. Can anyone confirm or deny that?

Also,Do any of you carry guns and knives for protection?

if so, what types?
I carry a Spyderco Endura on most days out.
but I switch on and off with others.
I also like to carry the Hubertus german switch with bone handles.

I carry a Glock 23 or 27 depending on what I'm wearing along with a Halo III EVERYDAY.

I carry a Glock 27 or 30, and either a SERE 2000 or Spyderco Chinook.
As for why I love knives, I just don't know really. I've wondered about it quite often, but I still can't honestly say why...same goes for handguns.

I carry an H&K P7 M8 as my primary weapon and a REKAT Sifu as backup. My ASP Key Defender provides me with non-lethal options via either the OC spray or use as a kubotan.

This is a very interesting question. I must say that I do appreciate the look and design of knives and let's face it knives are like toys for grown up men.

But beyond that, I was taught that it is always wise to have a good sharp knife on your person because you'll always need a cutting tool whether at work or play.

I remember at a young age watching my father weild his 18" hand forged bolo knife while doing yard work outside and learning to appreciate and use edged tools, and this knife was no show knife it was a real hard working tool. I have stories of blood relatives who have used such blades in honorable battle.

Anyway, that's my story . . .

Take care.

Perhaps it's in my blood to appreciate edged tools.

Yup! It's definately in my blood.

It is in the blood.

Edged tools, fire, and teamwork is what allowed us to survive as a species when we were at the mercy of the natural environment.

Tool making, tool using, and tool appraisal is bred into us and marks men especially.

A knife bit me when I was 12 and sharp objects have been in my blood since then. Besides, knives are just flat out cool

It is something primal I guess. Some knives just "speak" to me. As a whole though it is something of a mystery.

I've loved knives since I was knee high, why I can't say. My father was a butcher but I don't think that had much to do with it, as I only saw his butcher knives on rare visits to his shop. I do have a strong liking for kitchen and butcher type knives so maybe....... but I think we can agree on one thing.....
You don't get many women (bless them) interested in knives.
Why is that?

Wide ranging functionality combined with a potential for artistic expression. That's what attracts me. Engineering simplicity, elegance in execution, potential for artistic enhancement, multiplication of accessories, etc.

My mom always did have a problem with my knives. She doesn't like knives or guns as a whole, but she has learned that both are an extension of my personality. Whether or not she accepts that is her own problem!

She has thrown away a lot (approx 6) of my toys, but that is why I always bought the cheapies like Fury. I'm 19 and live in the dorms on campus, so I carry everyday and don't have to worry about her seeing them.
And women, don't get me started. It is hard to find a girl that shares my interest, but I managed to. $hitty thing is, I live in Fresno and she lives beyond the Orange Curtain.
Why is that bad you ask? I don't have car. I spend my money on knives.
