What "is" legal in your neck of the woods?

TYR....OK I won't move to Vermont...lol....I agree with all you quoted except for the blade length as I did the gun and badge thing in NYC for several years and can attest to the fact there is no blade lenght law, except for NYC admin code which states 4 " or less for locking blades. The penal law does list the fishing, hunting, trapping exception under section 265.20 #6. I have never found anything in the conservation law which states you can carry a switchblade, and I have looked for it. Most if not all arrest for weapons violations, even by Conservation Officers are always booked as violations of the Penal Law, and not the conservation law ( believe it or not alot of that has to do with how the money is budgetted...there is a different way the Law enforcement agency gets money allocated depending on which law it is enforceing)

tom19176: It has been over 5 years since I actually sat down in a NYS Law Library, and it would appear that I erred.

NYS Environmental Conservation Law does not seem to mention switchblades or gravity knives at all, and NYS Penal Law says nothing about blade length. It states that one may possess a switchblade or gravity knife "for purpose of hunting, fishing, or trapping" provided one has a valid license for such. Under any other circumstances (unless you're a POSTAL WORKER?!), it is a crime simply to POSSESS a switchblade or gravity knife in New York.

Even if you lawfully possess a switchblade for the purpose of hunting/fishing/trapping, you might get charged with a crime if you were carrying said knife in a public place. The same might apply to a mail carrier, harbormaster, or warden who was carrying a switchblade off duty. For some bizarre reason, EMTs and firefighters are NOT listed as professions "authorized" to carry automatic knives!

NYC, and certain other municipalities, have ordinances above and beyond State law which places further restrictions upon what one may carry . . . and "ignorance of the law is no excuse!"
