What is spacer?

It comes in a very patriotic array of colors including red, white, and blue. You see it seperating leather washers on some handles and keeping the stag off the brass on others. But what is it actually made from?

Acually you guys got it wrong. A spacer is the thing I used to put between my X and myself anytime I asked her about getting another knife.

(Not really true she was pretty supportive. Had to put that in since she lurks every once in a while )
