I am trying to set up five or six BOB's as presents for family members.

What would be the best, bombproof, easy maintenance, 4.5" - 6" fixed-blade knife for under $35.00?

I thought I had read about a CS knife for around that price that everyone was jumping on awhile back but can't find it.

You mean the G.I. Tanto I think.

That's it. I'm personally not that fond of tanto tips. Nothing wrong with them, just not my thing. Everything I read about them was outstanding for the price though.

I read a few reviews about some of the Condor knives earlier this morning. They seem like good knives as well.

Everything I've read about the Mora's has been good, especially the prices. I was looking for something with bit more heft to it though.

That Blackjack Grunt looks decent. Pretty good reviews.

Anything else to research before I start dinging my card?

Cold Steel makes several inexpensive fixed blades that are real bargains. I have had a Finn Bear for about a couple years now and it is still one of my go to fixed blades for hard work, even over my Moras.

I have a Finn Bear as well. The handle leaves a bit to be desired but it is a good value in spite of that.

Few that come to mind...

regular Cold Steel Bushman fixed blade
Mora of any kind
Iisakki Scout Knife (you can get 4.5" for around $28 online)
any of the new Schrade chinese knives (heard decent things about the fixed blades)
Buck 119 (around $35 at Wal-Mart, I see them sell for less on ebay all day long).
Gerber Profile (not fancy but decent reviews on them)

For around $35 you can get a Mora and a small, cheap pry bar to put in the bag. Then you don't have to worry about them using the knife as a pry bar, thus no worry about stabbing themselves or breaking the knife in the process. :D

I apologize. I missed the fixed blade part. I would do a SAK Camper and a Mora 2000.

One of the condor bushcraft knives. full tang, wood handles, and 1075 carbon steel, with a leather sheath, thats welted

A little over your price but have you thought about the good old USAF survival knife?

Id say a Mora 731(carbon) or 748(stainless), both 5 3/4" blades. I have a 749, which is the same knife but with an 8" blade. I use it in the yard all the time and its a tough bugger. Runs about $15, and it also makes for a good cooking knife.
Couple it with a folding saw and you're set.

+1 Mora.

the Clipper 840 can be had for under US$15 and is a remarkably high end piece of sharp pointy stuff.

Thanks to everyone for all of the replies.

I think I'm going to look a little more into a couple of the Condor knives and a couple of the Cold steel knives, and the Blackjack Grunt. They seem to be closer to what I'm looking for.

I know alot of you said Mora but I'm looking for something with a taller blade, a little more heft.

I would have to go with a Buck 119. You might have to look around abit to find one for $35 but they are one of the best knife values around IMO.
