CM, that method has worked well for many a year as long as your sheath can retain the knife in the upside down position . Back in the old days before MOLLE gear when dinosaurs roamed the earth, the best way to do that was a boot clip through the little metal loop on your web gear and either some tape or paracord. The old Gerber Mark I, while not being the ideal knife for such general use, had almost the ideal sheath design for that kind of carry IMO. It would have been mo' betta' if you could have reversed the clip, but you can't have it all.
I am a fan of inverted shoulder strap carry as seen on many Vietnam movies.
