what is the best traditional patten for edc

Hello and welcome.

You're going to get a ton of answers to this question as there are so many different options and individual preferences.

I prefer 1 or 2 blade knives that aren't any bigger than 4 inches closed. Dog legs...sway backs and my KHnutbuster seem to find the most time in my pocket.

I prefer the stockman, around 4". However, one of Kerry's KHnutbusters has monopolized my pocket time recently, and I don't think that'll change anytime soon.

Stockmans are my favorite design, but I have gotten along well with sodbusters and trappers. However, the one that I carry all of the time is a Victorinox huntsman.

Depends on your taste.

Knives are like ice cream; some people like chocolate, some like vanillia, others like rocky road. It's about as subjective as what you like the looks of and how it feels in your hand. Also how you dress most of the time will make a difference. A 4 inch stockman may be a bit much for business casual, but a peanut may get lost in Carhart work jeans.

Also, taste changes as you get older and go through different stages of life.

Stockman, trapper, sdbuster, whittler, peanut, all good if you like them.

I rotate through the following patterns throughout the week: stockman (equal end, serpentine, reverse gunstock, sowbelly), canoe, cattleman, swayback, peanut, trapper, and soon a barlow. Eventually I will look for a dogleg jack and maybe something else that is different.

I am starting to appreciate the old saying, “Variety's the very spice of life, That gives it all its flavor” as it applies to EDC knives at least.

2 bladed medium jack, mini trapper, sometimes a full size copperhead....
Its rare if I carry anything with 3 blades. I guess I'm in a rut

A 3 Bladed Medium Stockman:thumbup: And if ya can get it in Yeller with CV its the Perfect EDC:D

My favorite pattern is a stockman.

Until now I had been carrying a 3 1/4" stockman

Now I am carrying a 3 1/2" - 3 5/8" stockman.
I find it much bigger and more robust.
And still easy in the pocket.

I like all pocket knives and I agree with Carl...a lot of it has to do with taste AND how the knife will be used. That said, I believe the perfect EDC to be a 2 blade knife...the Wharncliffe trapper, swayback Jack, and peanut. They're not too big and have everything you need in a knife in a small package. Heck, they're small enough to carry one of each :D

YES..at the same time

My personal favorites are a mini trapper and a canoe...

Canoe - right now my #1 favorite - smooth lines that don't wear through pockets, one spring to keep it nice and thin.

Mini Trapper - it's a little thicker due to the two springs, but it is still a relatively rounded pattern and I like how a clip and spey (or clip and wharn) really compliment each other, use-wise.

Now, when I eventually get around to owning a slimline trapper, barlow, or sway back jack, I may have a different answer.

I think there's a knife for every purpose.. If I had to pick one it would be a serpentine whittler @ about 3 3/4" closed.......

I rotate a lot, based mostly on my mood, as well as the weather and the sort of activity I'm doing on a given day.

I like them all!

I rotate a lot. But there are some constants. There is a Victorinox SAK in my left front pocket. Varies day to day. And a Canoe in my watch pocket. Also varies to which one daily. I like a lot of patterns. But Canoes are number one. The most common to accompany it in the right front pocket is a copperhead. But I have been known to carry stockmans, ect... Whatever floats my boat that day.

Peanut, Moose, folding hunter/copperhead, Trapper, In that order.

The peanut is perfect for me, can do 99% of all tasks I need a knife for, carries well, it's not huge in the pocket. The moose is my favorite pattern in style/look, and blade arangement/types. The folding hunter being 5"+ of handle, and 4"+ of blade, there is nothing it can't do, and the style holds fond memories of my Dads knife. The copperhead is basically the same as the hunter, just a little smaller, easier to carry. A trapper is basically a moose in blade selection, and a good handle shape, usually a little bigger than a copperhead, but smaller than the hunter, a good size to carry-- same size as a moose usually...

But, then again, I'll carry almost anything, a nice folder is a nice folder, and I rotate every couple months what companion I carry with the peanut... I tend to dislike whittlers in carry, but do find them useful, just that the blade arangement doesn't agree with edc for me. On that note, I think I will carry my only whittler today, since it no doubt deserves some pocket time.

I hope to have something to pique your interest in the next couple of days, D. ;)

The patterns that find their way into my pocket most are the Swayback Jack, usually the two blade version, and the Wharncliffe Trapper. It's interesting that every knife I carry has a Wharncliffe blade.
