what is the best traditional patten for edc

I tend to prefer two blade jacks and pen knives in the 3.25-3.75in. range. I do like to carry a stockman or single blade soddie/opinel on occasion. I have my Boker Barlow in my pocket at this moment.

I like the Stockman pattern.

But, I also like Trappers.

And Scout knives.

And moose...I mean equal end opposing end trappers

And jack knives

And ..um. Come to think of it. I like them all. Better ask someone else.

I use to be stuck on 3 or more blades like a medium stockman, but now I am fond of 1 or 2 blade knives like gunstock or barlow pattern.

after much humming and hawing and reading a lot of those stories from Jacknife I decided on a Case medium stockman.

Then changed my mind and ordered a case small texas toothpick in yellow. I decided I wanted something really small and at 3" and 1oz this filled the bill.

Thanks to Paul at deknives for being so patient.

If I carry something besides my favorite cattleknife/stockknife pattern I go with a trapper or a moose.

I really like 2-blade jacks. Lately I've been carrying a doctor's knife with spatula (which can be used as a screwdriver or letter opener, among other things). This is basically a jack in which one of the blades is a spatula instead of a cutting blade.

I love the feel of a sodbuster, but I'm also partial to the stockman pattern. I also really enjoy the peanut pattern because it disappears so well in the fifth pocket and, while small, can handle nearly every task I throw at it, as long as it isn't food prep or splitting through lumber.

Stockman for me, for practical and sentimental reasons. Big blade for heavy utility use; spay for things like countersinking screw holes in wood; sheepfoot for whittling/wire stripping/pattern tracing/leather work, as a marking knife for sawing, etc. I probably use the sheepfoot blade 90% of the time.

thx - cpr

My favorite pattern is the large Trapper, but for me it's a bit large for every day carry loose in my pocket. Peanuts, tiny Trappers and similar patterns are for me a bit too small for many of the tasks I like to use my EDC for.

For true EDC my favorite tradition pattern right now is currently the Swayback Jack. Big enough to get most jobs done, but small and light enough not to be too noticable in my pocket.

the reason that i carry a case medium stockman is that it has the best combo of blades for my day to day that may change from person to person
i want my knife to let me start a fire, gut a few fish or anmial, peal an apple, make carving, and can be used for working on houses

i am a fan of stockman knives and i want to know what other people carry

Welcome to thee forum stockmanlover. :)

The truth is traditional slip-joint knives are as varied in styles, designs and blade specifications as the folks who carry and use them..

If you are really interested check this thread out:

You will not only discover what folks here carry but see a lot of the knives as well. I should mention it'll keep you busy for a little while but not to long.

Well,

I don't think this applies directly here but if someone had never bought a traditiional pocketknife and asked me what to get the first thing I would say is.......don't buy one over the phone or computer.

I think your first one should come from knife show, knife store, anywhere you can handle different ones.

I bet I can get a AMEN on this.....that one or some, no matter the make or model will "FEEL" better in YOUR hand than others will. And it may different for each one of us. I remember that feeling clear back when I was 11 (almost half a century) and the hardware store man slid back the display case door and handed me MY pocketknife. It's sorta like kissing, the feeling is still there just not like the electric shock of the first one.........

So anyone in the situation of buying a first or even second traditional pocketknife, check out the 'FEEL' there is just something mysterious about handling and feeling the
'RIGHT' knife for you......karma, Ying and Yang, Great Spirit.....something. Give it a try and you can't go wrong. Then after that happens we can begin to play the steel, scale and color game.....

Mainly two blades, a Teardrop Jack (Barehead) is my favourite. But a CASE Medium Stockman packs a lot of versatility without weighing the pocket down.

Actually I like nearly ALL patterns and try to give em a try once in a while.

The exceptions are Congress, too much bulk and blades and Toothpick, just don't like that pointy tail! Probably going to get firebombed for this....

Just THINK how many patterns we Traditionalists are fortunate enough to choose from.

I'm mostly carrying a Case peanut or small GEC Barlow, but I like the big blade/pen blade styles in general.
