What is the best?

Okay, I'm not trying to start a war here, just asking a very "simple" question...

What is the best "all around" Khukuri that can be used for self defense, and living in the boonies? I've been reading reviews until I'm blue in the face, and I still don't have a definative choice... There is one that I'm leaning toward that may do, but I'm not sure... Comparing it, the Gelbu Special Number One, in both lenghths, 18" and 21", to the Sirupate 18" and 20", leaves lots to the imagination. I really don't know which would be best for self defense...

I have a Chiruwa Ang Khola, 16.5", and it is magnificent. As good as it is, how does it compare with the Gelbu Special Number One, or the Sirupate? I want something to compliment it, that is lightning fast...

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated...

Thanks, Gentlemen...

Take care, stay safe, and have fun...

26 to 30 oz, approx 17" to 18" in length. If the emphasis is on work, then more forward weight heavy, like a AK, or Baby Ganga Ram. If the emphasis is on 'fighting', then more evenly balanced, and perhaps closer to 24 or 26 oz.

The 18" WWll at 28 oz is real hard to beat- it has just enough weight to be a mongrel dog hard worker, yet fast enough for battle.

The Gelbus, Chits and Sirupates are on the fighting end of the equation.

Good Thread.

Is the fastest Khukuri HI makes, a 15" sirupati would work also, but the chainpuri has the superior handle, no brass buttplate to dig into your hand, so its lighter, I guess you could use those longer, heavier blades, If ya was fighting grizzlies. I have a pair of 18" Kobras, they are your fathers oldsmobile, the 15" chainpuri is a vette w/ a 3" exhaust, & a aftermarket cam & super charger added. How fast is it, how fast can you move your empty hand ! I can get 2-3 strikes in while your swinging that big heavy blade. My 15", 12oz chainpuri is so fast it moves at blur speed, you wont see it coming
The recent offerings of these 15" chainpurii by Miss Yangdu is a result of my having her order some for me, I thought the 18" Kobras weren't fast enuff for me, & the 12" blades handles are to small to get a proper grip (& I don't have big hands) to easy to be dusarmed or lose your blade if ya off hit
I asked Miss Yamgdu to have the kamis make em fast & to put 5" handles on them, they delivered
I can't beleive nobody bought them, I got 6 now lol, 2 are flashy in case I start competing again, the other 4 are villagers, you guys don't know what you missed out on
The 15" Chainpuri will make you a Dragon
Tom
ps no disrepect intended, but he asked whats best for sd & lightening fast
if I knew then what I know now, I would have a 15-18" BGRS/GRS for chopping wood & a 15" Chainpuri for fighting bad guys, if ya can only afford 2, thats what I would get

There is no such thing as "the best" khukuri. There is only a best khukuri for you, if at that. A continuous craving for THE ONE is one of the classic symptoms of HIKV.

Carter, welcome to the Cantina.

Like Bob said, it 'pends on you.

For most people, a 15-18" kuk will be the 12 gauge shotgun of knives. Personally, I'm partial to the 16.5" WWII. I wouldn't rec the +15" AKs for an "all-around" kuk because of the weight, but

15" AK
15" BAS
16.5" WWII
17-19" Sirupati, Chitlangi or Chainpurri
17" Villager
17" BGRS
18" WWII

might all be good, all-around versatile kuks for you.

Edit- I see you're asking about both versatility AND self-defense. Personally, I like both quick AND powerful for SD, so what works best for all-around kuk for me also works best for potential defensive usage. Not everyone will agree, but that's why we're all different people.

IMO, once you go beyond 17-18" you've essentially entered "Inconveniantly Large" territory unless you're hanging it from a baldric or something. Even then you risk jabbing yourself in the leg when you kneel down, beating the hell out of the scabbard and door when entering and exiting vehicles, tearing up walls and getting hung up on things in the woods. Smaller is better in my eyes.

For the woods around here, with my typical loadout and method of carry, my 15" BGRS is excellent. The 17" FF is just about as good. I'd give the FF the edge in a fight and the BGRS is a tougher, more efficient working tool. But, not everyone deals with the conditions that I do and if I lived elsewhere, I'd probably have a different opinion of things.

I would not go below 15" for something that's going to see use as a tool. Below 15" you lose a lot of chopping ability.

YMMV.

Rereading Carters post, I see he asked several questions
this is the question I was answering

The GRS, WWII, AK, BAS, Villager in the 15-18" are all fine, all around use khukuris

I have my eyes set on a 18" chitlangi...............

Shall be good for self defense.............:)

And the fullers ! :)

If you're looking to complement the AK, I'd go with the 14" BDC.
If you want something a little larger, maybe an M43.
Can't say enough good things about either of them...

You just described my WWII. Works like a mule and is what I usually grab to check out things that go bump in the night. My first and still my favorite.

I agree with this. Once you go over 2 lbs for me something like a Granfors Bruks Hunters or Small Forest Axe is better. 15" for hiking and backpacking, 17 or 18" for around in my woods. I like the BGRS

Carter, as you see by now, this is not that kind of place -- for which I thank all that is holy and mundane. The culture is to disagree (if you disagree) without verbal bloodshed. That is due to three thing, IMO:

>the folks here are self-selected for attitude (Nothing here to excite the bloody-minded, let's have-a-flame war crowd. :yawn: );

>we have great mods  ; and

>we have mods who are gone but are still with us - watching how we behave. :)

Another vote for the 18" WWII. It was my third khuk and still sees most camp duty. The YCS is a VERY tempting second choice. About the same weight, chirwa handled, etc. I haven't been camping since I got my YCS, but I have a feeling it'll be used next time. However, if i HAD to pick something lighter more & packable then i really, really like my AK bowie. doesn't chop like a khuk, but i got along for years with out being able to chop through a 4" tree in 30 seconds. Choppy enough for what I need and packs straight. But, for the "there can be only one" khuk, i gotta say toss up between WWII and YCS. WWII packs a little smaller and the YCS chops a bit better...but i really like the m43 as well. Kind of a mixture of those two....<sigh> it's a sickness;)

...pretty bad...

hahahhaha................... :D

least I know what I want next.......... :)

but if a BDC comes up..........hmmm........better yet a tin chirra...........

a sword.........??(hasn't been one for a long time).............or a YCS ?? :D

I don't know what I'll do................ :o

I have a couple to choose from...

Fast - Chit or Chain.
Chopping - YCS or GRS

Single for any duty under the sun - WWII 18" (I have a great speed draw rig and a selection of WWIIs depending on if I am showing off, mucking about or ready for anything.)
