Just wondering what the largest knife out there is that sports the revolutionary MagnaCut steel.

as of right now, the 4" blade from RMJ "unmei" is the longest magnacut blade ...
of course, customs will surely have more options :)

I still need to know why the heck they're running those at RC59-60 when designed for RC62-64. Can't even really argue that fixed blades need more toughness, a 4" fixed blade is just not that big. Unless RMJ is also on the "BuT u cAn shArpen On ROcK" train.

Dawson Knives has some very large blades in MagnaCut, including a 25 inch katana. I have a 5.5 inch Big Bear from them in Magnacut and it has held up very well to everything. I would not be comfortable using it in a 25 inch sword though.

sadly, I believe there is a tendency to over temper (using high temper temperatures) to increase toughness.... likely left over from dealing with s30v & s35vn 'chippyness' issues

...to do this with magnacut means they likely doing 500F temper :(

why can't they just use Larrin Larrin suggestions for heat treatment?

Is over tempering easier and cheaper to deal with than employing proper quality control ? Is the steel really the best choice for the intended purposes and/or likely use the type of knife design will encounter in the hands of the masses? Does the name (pick the name of a popular super steel of the day) sell more knives.

I suspect marketing. They are counting on people being ignorant and buying it just because it's magnacut or what ever other super steel.
People need to know what the steel is optimized for and choose the right steel for their needs that is properly made (heat treat tempering grind etc...) to exploit the steel's strong points.

I read about 3V steel over hardened by some companies to give better edge retention causing a significant drop in toughness. 3V is made to excel in toughness with adequate edge retention not the other way around. Everybody wants it all but unfortunately despite what these companies tell you to get you to buy their products to this day although much better it's still advantages at the cost of compromises.

If edge retention is at the top of your list and you only desire adequate toughness or the other way around choose the steel that is optimized for what you like and if it's done right you will be happier.
