What is the Bottle Opener Really For?

My last purchase was my first Izula after alot of reading here on the Forums for a decnt inexpensive neck knife. It was between the Becker Necker and Izula. My unscientific poll showed the Izula with more votes of confidence although I'm sure I wouldn't go wrong with either knife so soon I'm sure I'll own both.

What I can't figure out though is the bottle opener on the becker. Besides the obvious purpose it just doesn't seems to be a obvious complement to a neck knife.

Granted I'm not the camping or survivalist knife user so I was just wondering what others use this feature on the knife for.

Does it need other uses? :)

It can also be used for some form of prying I suppose.

I asked about bottle openers on knives at this forum about a month ago and it seems that most knife collectors drink a lot of over seas beer.

Interesting and probably true--I love craft beers. But if my only bottle opener is on my knife, I'm not sure that that would be something I would use a whole lot. Drinking + Knives usually makes other people very nervous.

What...? ...booze and knives don't mix?

How else am I going to open my Corona, AND cut up the limes to go in it?

booze and knives don't mix; that's such a contrived statement...then booze and scissors don't mix either

i use the bottle opener on a sak all the time...used the one on the hest when i've carried it too...

Man,
I freaking love the bottle opener on the Becker. I use it all the time - for the Dos Equis and limes. I know it's a weird novelty, but it's one that happens to merge two things I love to do. Drink and cut things. I probably need a bottle opener more often than I need a knife.

I got rid of the Izula (w/ scales) b/c it was close to the same thing as the Becker, but did not have a bottle opener.

Well I guess that answers my curiousity, it's used to open bottles and cans. What was I thinking! Thanks

Booze and tools such as knives and guns dont mix.

now you tell me..

I use the bottle opener on my bk11 if I can't find my SAK. I have also used it to open a paint can and it worked really well. I'd use it for prying something like that before I used the tip of the blade.

HAHAHAHA

That made my day, thanks!

In all seriousness I never really understood the combination.

Maybe I'm taking things too seriously here, but I always thought the 'bottle opener' on the BK11 was in actuality a wire breaking notch. It doesn't seem properly shaped for an effective bottle opener to me.

I'd agree that it is not the most effective bottle opener. Compared to the bottle opener on a SAK it's not great. I've seen it described as both a wire breaking notch and a bottle opener. It deforms caps and sometimes you have to pry in several places, but it works and doesn't require very much effort.

Call me stupid but what is "wire breaking"

It means you could use it to cut (actually break) fence wire, tie wire, or any thick'ish cable. You simply stick the wire in the "wire breaking" notch and bend it back and forth a couple times, and the wire will break.

Some of the olde SAK knives have the inside edge of the bott;e opener blade sharpened and it works great for cutting heave twine, ripping seams in light canvas and stripping wire. As for knives and booze not mixing then why are bartender knives so collectable?
