What is the classic Spyderco?

Hi Cbrstar,

The film was "Cliffhanger" and the model was the Endura. I would suggest that you purchase an Endura or Delica (smaller) with an FRN (plastic) handle. Not fair to judge Spyderco's handle, serrations or steel because you had some other brands version. There are very few companies out there that can come close to Spyderco's product.

I think it was the actor Ralph Waite that whipped out an Endura. I remember thinking how neat that was, because I had one in my pocket at the time.

The first Spyderco I remember was a Delica size knife with black scales, serrated blade and Japanese steel, so to me that is the classic Spyderco, at the time Im had no idea how revolutionary that little knife was. the Endura was my gateway drug with it's scalpel sharp edge out of the box and a easy one handed operation. I own some other knives, nice ones too but everyone who knows me including my knife dealer friends know I carry a Spyderco always. This is my work tool and no one does it better.

Love to hear from the man himself! My first was an Endura (with integrated pocket clip) because at the time Spyderco was the only brand that I knew that had serrations. The blade survived a 16 year old teenage level of abuse. Thirty years later I have more than a 100..... Even a few of them are plain edge.

100 Enduras, Spydercos or knives?

The endura is almost a traditional knife to me—my favorite of the classics is the military. Going forward I’m mostly looking at the stretch though (due to price increases.)

This IMO.

cbrstar cbrstar Have you seen a Positron in person? I ask as I recently bought one from a fellow BFer and it is a tiny knife. I was surprised at how small it is.
No all I've seen is the video of it opening It looks good though.

The Endura seems like a pretty good price and what I'm looking for. Though the Police seems to have the features like the G10 handles. It's a tough decision lol

The Spyderco Police G10 is discontinued I think. I cant even find them listed at my dealers.

One of the shops I was looking at still has the Police with a V10. Its $230 Compared to the $277 for the 4.

The first Spydercos I ever saw were the SS Police SE and the Endura SE. And I believe the first movies I saw them in were Hard Target, Needful Things and Cliffhanger. Then later in The Client and Eraser. Though oddly enough, the Spyderco that left the first big impression on me (I don't know why) was the Delica in Anaconda. For some reason, it finally clicked with me that the knife looked "weird" with the hole in the blade.

 It most certainly does not "look weird". Now putting a thumb stud on a Buck 110 looks weird. The spydiehole is as classic to modern folders as a nail nick is to traditionals.

You have to understand the context of that statement. I'm talking about my first impressions of seeing a Spyderco in the movies, *back in the 1990s*. At the time, I had no internet and had never seen one, nor ever heard the name Spyderco before. To a millennial or someone who is young and maybe always seen Spydercos from early on, of course they look classic and iconic. The first time I ever saw a Spyderco I was in my 30s. They look normal to me now, but they didn't more than 20 years ago.

I'm the same way it just looked weird from the shape of the blade to the way it sat open from the handle reminded me of a old fashioned razor blade lol. But now after owning a few knives I finally get it and understand just what an amazing design these are.

Before flippers were a big thing here back in the 90's, a lot of the "punks" where I lived had seen a Spyderco and they would take there wanna be cheap 110 and drill a hole in the blade then attach a zip tie to it.

I watched a vid on the Police and it looks a tad big... I was hoping to maybe buy one local and see what it's like for myself, but the Spyderco website wasn't working for me. Does anyone know of any authorized dealers near Edmonton Alberta?

Delica. I was gifted my first spyderco for Christmas in 1995. Fully serrated delica. Great knife I had until just a few years ago when someone broke into my car and stole it. Though other stuff was taken that was worth more monetarily, the delica meant a lot more to me.

For me it is absolutely the Delica and Endura. I got a G2 Delica when I was 13 or 14 years old, I'm 38 now. Has the full FRN w/integrated clip. That G2 was magically corrosion resistant. I lost it at a remote dune camp that only I and my friend's brother used, and the next summer he found it in the sand after sitting out all winter under 3' of snow. A little scotch briting and it was good as new. It's still kicking around somewhere in my house, plastic clip still intact and everything.
