KGD's thread about the Canadian Camping trip brought a laugh to my wife as I read her the responses about how cold it was (I'm picking on you Texans here;)). She just said "I've camped in tents in -30 C, and would not be surprised if it was colder" (Feb/March on the ice off of an island in the arctic ocean where she grew up). I've hit in the -25 C range while working on a study of Eider Ducks just on the north coast of Canada, but it averaged around -10 C for the first 2-3 weeks. Unfortunately none of the pics have been turned digital. I loved it- but then again, anything over 25 C is way to hot for me to do anything except be in hell.

Just wondering what extremes the fine people here have camped in (be it for work/fun/necessity).

Met up with friends in Georgia, and camped two nights. It was 12F in my tent this morning. Wind gusts were up to 35 mph.
My fire skills got a workout!
We had a great time, ate like pigs, and did a lot of cold weather hiking.
I was very pleased that all my gear worked as planned.

I have camped out for two weeks during a -20 to -30 degree stint a number of years ago. That is probably the coldest camping trip though I didi spend some time in arctic training in the service that may have been colder. It was sorta out of neccesity as I was homeless at the time.

The hottest I've ever camped in was 125 F in the middle east when I was in the U.S.M.C. Thogh we hit the same temps during desert training at 29 palms.

I actualy prefer the cold over that heat anyday.

I camp up here, and you know how cold it can get.;):D

I'd have to say around -30, -35, not including wind chill.

Nothing as cold as Fonly and CLAK and others, but it was -18C early in the evening, so probably went to -20C.

And like CLAK, anything over 70F is hell for me.

Hey Mannlicher...that must have been the Frugal get together in Central GA...I just caught word of that a little too late.

Other than my forced camping (old Infantry days), I don't think I've been out where it was below zero. I can remember a few trips where it dipped into the low teens.

As for hot...well, we did a lot of backpacking/camping in TX and we've been out in 110+ temps. You definately need a place to jump into a river or small pool and cool down!

It got down to -40oC outside one winter trip in Sudbury according to the outside thermometer. The inside of our tent was a balmy -5 or so. We had a small wood stove in there and I was glad in 2 Cdn army down sleeping bags (rated to -20 each). I was toasty, but I remember taking a morning pee wasn't so fun.

Though, I have to say. The ultimate temperature of Rick & Scott's camp-out wasn't that cold, it was impressive to me that they did it with minimum gear. No -20 degree sleeping bags, foam sleeping bags and thermorests. Just the clothes on their backs and the tarp for protection. It still takes some balls (even if they remain 3/4 of the way into your abdomen) to do that!!

-8C/18F (Arizona desert in a Feb sleet storm, Colorado mountains in Mid-May and September - fortunately it warmed up quick after sunrise, but the 18" of snow closed our trails that day) and 49C/~120F(Kansas on Labor day weekend)

My first night in my Clark north American was -10C.It was chilly but I was prepared. The warmest was almost 40C later that next summer. The humidity was extreme too we all were baking to death that night.I slept on top of my sleeping bag with only my bug netting on my hammock and it was still almost unbearable.

i sleep outside on our lanai (i snore incredibly loud)....so far this the coldest it got was around 8F i got about 5hours of sleep....my body wasnt cold but the air i was breathing was what woke me up.

hottest was in vegas.. high 80s maybe even broke 90...does passing out count?? :D

I was out in about 0*F, about 2 years ago. It was more fun than anything in the heat. I stayed warm, and would have been fine if it were colder. Than again, I am not sure the others felt the same way :D

coldest i ever camped, read in at a whopping 23 celcius on my handy thermometer.. warmest was about 35 (god aweful night, ended up just sleeping in the open on the beach, no breeze at all)

My circumstances have been extreme. However, this has been due to schools I have attended. During a course I was in, we slept in a lean-to in -65 f. This was done with a bag in a bag for sleeping and no fire. It wasnt the temp that was a problem but that at 3 am, the lashing we used broke and dropped the whole lean-to on us. As for heat, well over 100 f at Ft. Bragg in the summer. Could not sleep until 3 or 4 in the morning, and only a couple of hours at that. I would take cold any day over the heat. My wife and I still talk about a time in CO when we went from 93 f to -17 f in a 24 hr period. That type of temp swing is the hardest for me to deal with.

My coldest was probably -25 C or so. That was in northern Ontario. Damn chilly. Spent ten minutes in the tent shaving a huge pile of curls and fuzz sticks before I ventured outside to start a fire to make coffee in the morning. Warmest was about 32, and that was also in Ontario - in Muskoka, actually, during a heat wave.

I like my winter camping in the -8 to -16 range, and my summer camping in the +6 to +15 range (anything above that and I melt). The extremes aren't quite as enjoyable. That pocket between +3 and -3 can be miserable too, especially if it's wet.

All the best,

- Mike

The warmest I've camped in was 29 Palms while I was active in the Marine Corps, 122 degrees in the Mojave. Trust me, it's stupid hot. The coldest is about 0-5 degrees while I was in the Boy Scouts we did a lot of winter outings in the Sierras. We's dig out a few snow caves and bed in for 3-4 days. It was a blast and it taught me A LOT about winter survival and what it really takes to survive in those temps.

I've never been in real cold but last summer I backpacked in Southern California with some W&SS forum members and it got up to 106 degrees. It felt really hot. I can't even imagine 122 degrees in the Mojave:eek:

The coldest I've camped was -2 degrees Fahrenheit, in the high Sierras.

The hottest was 119 Fahrenheit, outiside Las Vegas. However, the 5 days camping in 113 degree weather, with very high humidity (in the Midwest, during a heatwave, in the Summer of 1988) seemed hotter.

Doc, CLAK, anything over 70F is hell for you? Interesting – Up to at least 105 F, the heat doesn't bother me at all.

Coldest about -10°C, drove about 3hrs to compete in a 4x4 trials event with my Iltis, then set up my tent in a snowstorm with a headlamp on. All the other competitors had trailers or RV's and were shaking their heads. Fun times...
Hottest must have been in around Phoenix Arizona. If I remember it correctly it was more than 40° C. It was incredibly hot in the tent.

thats the one alright. We had a good turn out, did a lot of interesting stuff. Wish you had made it my friend.
All 'the usual suspects' were there.;)

Hottest I've ever camped in was in Iraq: 120's. Coldest was somewhere in Northern Utah: A little below 0 with the wind chill. Miserable both times. At least no one was trying to kill me in Utah.
