Excuse my ignorance. A friend wants to buy a RAT knife and he has discovered that there is some kind of difference  between the Randall's Adventure and Training (RAT) knives offered on the www.jungletraining.com website and the Ontario RAT Knives offer at www.ontariorat.com/rat-3.htm.

Can you tell us what the difference is?

Thank you all!

RAT Designed Knives...
RAT has been designing field cutlery since 1997. At RAT Cutlery we feel our knives offer the real world a great knife at a reasonable price. Throughout our history we have always concentrated our efforts on listening to feedback from those who go and do, then doing our best to build our knives at a price point users can afford.

While researching & designing many of our past projects we have had the honor of working with some of the top teams in the world, including the U.S. Marshals Service, USMS SOG teams, U.S. Special Forces teams, Navy Special Boat Teams, Peruvian Special Forces, Colombian Police Forces, the Peruvian Anti-Narcotics Task Force, survival experts, and outdoorsmen and adventurers all over the world.

RAT designs have achieved quite the recognition around the world, not because we're such great designers but because we listen and work with the user in the field to achieve a common goal of building a great piece of gear that works.
For our higher grade field knives and direct internet sales from RAT Cutlery, please visit RAT Cutlery Company's website. For our Ontario Knife Co. designs, visit Ontario RAT Knives.

New RAT Cutlery=mid-tech small volume production with tighter attention to detail. Better sheaths.

Ontario RATs=mass production. Mostly hit, sometimes miss.

Either way, the RAT team backs both lines with a no BS approach to warranty issues.

I believe that the Ontario RAT knives were/are designed by RAT and produced by Ontario. The new RAT knives are designed and produced by RAT. I think that there are some small differences in the materials and specs, and the sheaths may be different, but the knives are very similar. The only question that I would ask is; "Do I want to buy from Ontario, or from RAT?"

Boats beat me with a better explanation.

FROM Jeff : The first thing we want to clear up is RAT Cutlery and Ontario RAT are two different companies. Mike and I design both lines but the RAT Cutlery line is solely owned by Mike and myself. Ontario has nothing to do with RAT Cutlery. We receive royalties from the Ontario RAT line for our design work.

Currently RAT Cutlery makes the RC-3 which is an upgraded model of the older RAT-3. We are also introducing an RC-4 and RC-6 before SHOT show time. All of these can be seen on our web site at www.ratcutlery.com There are also plans for a neck knife, tomahawk and forged hand ax for 2008.

What sets RAT Cutlery apart from the Ontario RAT line? RAT Cutlery is not a high production maker. In fact, you might call us more along the lines of "mid-tech." Rowen Manufacturing builds the RAT Cutlery line for us. Once you handle one of our blades you will see the quality, symmetry and attention to detail that goes into RAT Cutlery.

With all that said, we handle customer service for both RAT Cutlery and Ontario RAT. With RAT Cutlery we have a "no questions asked" warranty. You break it or screw it up - we replace it. Our knives will break if you abuse them enough, we make no claims otherwise, but if you abuse it and break it then we'll send you another one. If you have an issue with an Ontario RAT knife then please come to us on that also and we will do everything in our power to satisfy you.

You will also notice major upgrades to sheathing when you buy a RAT Cutlery product. Mike and I have invested a pile of money in molds and other components to build the most versatile sheathing in the market.

Lastly, RAT Cutlery is heavily involved in building knives for law enforcement agencies. We specialize in private label and specialized knives. If you have a project, then we will look at it and quote it.

Do the RAT ones as opposed to the Ontario RAT ones have better edges? I've always liked the knives but the grind at least on the Ontario ones has always seemed too steep for me.

 RC3 is almost as perfect as it gets edge wise. I prefer the RC3 over any of my Ontario Rats. Better fit/edge/ overall quality is superb compared to any Ontario Rat I own IMO

Ontario is on the other side on the blade, Ontario is having issue with the 1095 version of the RAT3 so if you ordered it could be a while before they start shipping!

Doesn't the RC-3 have: 1) a longer handle; 2) differentially heat-treated blade; and 3) different sheath?

What if I buy a RAT and it gets eaten by a BOA, where do I go for warranty issues... you guys are killing me here!:D

I like the Rat line alot and have two on order, a RAT-7 D2 and a RTAKII plain edge, I asume they are both from the RAT line-up then?

Question for Texas Tony: Could we expect some clip point blades from the RAT line soon?.... man a 7" or 8" clip point would be nice, lot's of cutting edge.

well technically nothing wrong with the knife....because a boa ate it.,he'll pass it& good as new.. I have the RAT7 & RTAK both great knives...clip point not sure of at this point
