What is the difference between the old odyssey I and the new?

I know the new odyssey has a metal backbone, but how can I tell them apart in pictures of magazines without being able to see top or bottom views? What writings on the blade tell them apart?

first off,the catalogs will sometimes use the same photos,so dont count on that 100%.my
2000 buck catalog says the 2000's have the
metal back and full liner.i have a 181fx from 1998 with the plastic back.it does every thing i need.

Knife man,
I definetely agree that you would do good to disregard the picture in a catalogue. The best way to know what you are getting os to ask the seller questions. I can say that the older ones had ATS-34 either etched or engraved out towards the chamfer of the blade. The engraved ones are fairly rare though.
