What is the etiquette on calling out prices on the exchange?

I mean like, say I see someone selling a NIB knife that is significantly cheaper at an online retailer?Would it be okay to post in the thread about that or should I just let them be and hope potential buyers do their homework?

Leave it be or send a PM, don't trash someone's thread.

Precisely. It will either sell or it won't. Maybe the seller doesn't really want to give it up, but will for the right price. Send a PM if you must, but I'd let it be.

I believe that would be against the rules here. If I'm not mistaken, in a sales thread, anything besides posts that directly address purchasing the items for sale would be in violation of the agreement we all acknowledged when signing up. The rules involving the exchange can be found on one of the stickies in that forum.

We've all seen those sale posts but who are we to tell somebody what price to put on their knife? Just move along and try to forget about it or if you must say something like was said above me just do it through PM or email but don't be surprised if they tell you where to put your "advise". :) I just shake my head and kinda laugh to myself then hit the back button and don't give it another thought.

What price is "fair" can be very subjective -- it's what the buyer is willing to pay, and the seller is willing to accept.

Too add to this, if you are interested in purchasing said knife, then just make an offering price while pointing out where you can buy it cheaper? Is that against the rules? I admit that I have posted sale prices without looking up the cheapest prices online, that doesn't mean I won't change my mind if someone points it out.

5.Do not post in a person's thread unless you have an implicit interest in buying the item. Posts like, "Nice knife!", "Why is the price so high/low?", "I wish I had funds" are not allowed. This means absolutely no commentary or feedback in someone's sales thread. Seriously, if you stomp on someone's ad, your account can and will be locked. The only exception to this is in the Custom Knife Exchange areas (if the maker/craftsman requests and welcomes feedback)

I think what I stated still abides by the rules. As long as you have funds and intend to purchase, then why not make an offer equal to a price found elsewhere? After all, you'd probably be helping the seller out if he/she doesn't understand why their knife isn't selling. With all that said however, unless you are going to purchase the knife then just keep it to yourself, people can charge whatever they want and can learn how the economy works the hard way I guess.

If you want to make an offer do it in private not in their thread.

If you violate the rules as written, you will get infractions. Crapping in someone's sales thread is not a good idea. Worry about your own sales threads, people can sell an item for how ever much money they want, it's not our business (yours included).

The easiest thing to do is assume the seller isn't aware of the cheaper price and really wants to sell their knife. On occasion I've PM'd a seller letting them know that their knife might move faster if they price closer to what they are selling new at xxxxx.com, even though I'm not interested in buying the knife. Usually the response is "oh, I didn't know that. Thanks!" If I want to buy it, I use xxxxx.com as a negotiating tool.

Alright, thanks, I guess I haven't read the rules of the exchange that well.

+1

Some things don't need to be in the rules to be wrong.

There aren't any stupid questions, but some come pretty close. Your not asking this question with an unbiased view.

Sorry Invective, you must be young and I believe you have good intentions. Capitalism doesn't work that way. Truly Educated shoppers would collapse the system. Supply and demand isn't what it use to be. If you want people to get a good deal. Offer them up yourself.

Without greed you'll have nothing material. This is still Earth , like it or not.

If anyone ever notices my prices are to low. Please PM me with the going rate.:p especially you buyers

The seller might have gotten the item when it was just launched and before any discounts, etc., and is just trying to recoup a part of what he paid.

Anyway, its up to the buyer to do his homework before a purchase.

A seller isn't breaking any rules by asking what he/she wants, even if someone else thinks it's too high, so it's not my place to tell them what I think they should be selling it for.

That said, I pay about as much attention to those types of sale threads as I do those with no photos. :)

Definitely post rude comments in the sales thread, perhaps insult their ancestors also. Mods love that and will shower you with cherry candies.
