"Remember years ago, that American teenager got caned for vandalizing cars in Singapore? Everyone said, "How cruel and inhumane.""
Oh yeah. Remember the case well. Kid was smart enough to shake the hand of the whipper after the whipping, then appear on "Larry King Live". I believe the caning thing came from the time (not so long ago) when jail wasn't a punishment for many because life on the street was worse.
I understand that the kid went back to live with his father and then got into some real trouble (attacked his father one night and had to be locked up if I remember correctly).
At the time most people in the States seemed to like the Singapore system. True there is very little crime (especially violent crime). But it does cost something. Bringing in a shotgun costs US$300+ in storage and transport fees (it is taken by armed escort from the airport special holding area to the amory). An outsider has to pay a four digit figure to join the gun or rifle club in order to shoot skeet regularly. If you get into trouble as a teenager (shoplifiting, a fight, underage drinking, even underage smoking sometimes), it is rumored that your records are kept on a computerized database which follows you for life through the army and your career (one reason why crimes are solved so quickly).
Come to think about it . . . I wonder how much of the forum would have served some time if they were born in Singapore?

(but sir, that Tarwar is not a sword, it's a piece of art, only for display purposes, but but but I didn't know that . . . . )
