What is the hoopla about Hinderer?

Hey Members!
I am a pretty new member to this forum and have been collecting for a few months now. I am awaiting the arrival of my first Hinderer, bought the XM 24 Spanto blade version, with new logos. Look forward to holding and playing with a Hinderer for the first time. I notice that his knives are sold within a few days. Why are Rick's blades so highly regarded and are apparently equally collectable. Was hard to justify paying $ 850 for a knife but have to find out for myself. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

His knives are good, some of the best around for that kind of knife, they are Mid Techs with a high attention to detail.

However they are limited in supply, the reason for the high secondary market prices, usually around double what his prices are direct from him.

If it's worth it or not is your opinion that you will form once you get it.

Just wait until you hold it in your hand and flip that blade open. You'll hopefully understand. The confidence you will feel flowing from this knife will justify the high price you pay due to demand. Not saying that other makers don't also inspire this kind of feeling and confidence but there's also the balance, the weight, and the ergonomics that will either speak to you or not.... The 24 is built like a bank vault and it feels like a fixed blade. Smooth as butter and you can take it apart easily and put it back together easily.

Interesting question.

So...you are new to collecting knives and dished out $850 bucks on a knife that you can't figure out the "hoopla" for? Must be nice to have that kinda coin to toss around randomly! :D

I'm sure you have an understanding of the hoopla....what made you think it was worth spending $850 on a Hinderer?

That IS an interesting question!

Nice thing about Hinderer's is that they can be experienced and easily sold for what you paid if you don't see the value. So you can "see" what it is people are so eager to pay for. Especially an XM for $850, which is a great price...

Every post above me is pretty much all the reasons why they're so popular and pricey. I love my XM18 3.5 slicer. It's my user and has some of the best fit and finish I've seen. The lock up is also rock solid! And they're just plain cool.

I think you're gunna love yours!

I'll buy that. I wonder if that was among the reasons why knife4cc that it was a good move to sink the 850 bucks on a Hinderer.

I always have a hard time getting my head around these "Why did I buy knife X?" threads! I guess I don't have the resources to buy a knife and justify it afterwards! :D

The two I had(an XM-18 3.5 &3") were good knives, but I ultimatley moved them on. I wouldn't personally pay the inflated prices for one, but everyone has different ideas of their worth. Hopefully, you enjoy it!

Think of it in terms of % of your avaliable money. If you have $1000, 850 is 85% of your total money.

If you have $100,000, $850 is 0.85% of your total money.

At that point, it's a drop in the bucket. At $1000, it's the bucket.

I have a friend who lives in a small 2 bedroom 1.5 bathroom cottage that he paid off years ago. The roof has shingles missing and the front yard is a jungle with a rusting BBQ grill. You wouldn't know that around back he's got a garage that houses a Mercedes SL55, BMW X5, Mini Cooper and 2 Harley's. It's all a matter of priorities.

Nope. Don't have it. :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it makes no sense to pay $850 for a knife. That's not at all what I'm getting at. I understand doing that entirely! If I had the extra $850...I would! And a Hinderer would be an excellent choice, from what I have heard.

What confounds me is the "I bought a knife...what is good about it?" threads....regardless of cost. Maybe it's just the way I'm wired.

I understand the OP's reason for the post. I did the same thing when I bought my Junglas. You do all the research, you know you want it, you finally get the nerve up to pull the trigger, and then once you have you want to hear some more great things about the knife to 1) help pass the time while you are waiting and 2) convince yourself that you didn't just do something stupid! I must say that in my case no-one really replied to my post about the Junglas so I felt kind of nervous. Of course, once I received it and used it I was overjoyed!

It's a $380 knife at manufacturer's full price.

If you want to pay $800 for it from scalpers, that's your business.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I have a few hobbies and very much into them. I never get into a hobby without being passionate about it. This forum has been great and have picked up some good deals on like new/excellent knives from awesome members. I have Yunas, Striders, CRs, Southpaws, Flahertys, and others. Hinderer is probably the only semi custom knife I do not own. When this pretty good deal popped up, I thought it is time to own one. I know can sell her for what I paid if it is not to my liking. Have a Great day!

*That*, my friend, is an excellent reason to try a Hinderer...

I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Who needs hoopla anyway? ;)

I just got an XM 24 spanto and the XM 18 3.5 Spanto. I had never held one or seen one in person before. I like "knife4cc" did some research, followed the posts on the forum and saw that if I did not like them I could sell them as well. I still have not decided if I want to keep them. I have been collecting for many years but am just now getting into the tactical knives. I got a CRK Sebenza and did not see what all the "hoopla" was about that either. Yes it's a well built knife, but it does not deploy very well. At least mine is very tight. I have heard that I should just hang in there because it is supposed to get more smooth over time. I bought the ZT 560 and was impressed with that for the $ and see where the true Hinderer would be worth the "normal" price for the knives but I am not sure for ME if I want to have that much tied up in the two that I have. I will keep you posted. I think the next knife I want is an Elishewitz flipper custom but I have never held one of those either. I will be at the NY custom knife show helping a good friend of mine at his table. I am sure some of you know him... Mike Donato with KnifePurveyor. Maybe I will see you there...

+1. People could go to a knife show that Rick is attending and enter the lottery for a chance to purchase a knife at his very reasonable price. IMO a hinderer at secondary market price is nothing special. At Ricks price they are amazing!
