What is the most prestigious upscale knife shop in the US, or around the globe?

the best selection of knives

The store I am thinking about would be the knife equivalent of Tiffany and Co, Channel, Cartier; The probability of finding a production knife there is about the same as the chances of finding a Timex at Tourneau.

Thinking about this, I doubt you'll see a super-high end custom cutlery store anymore. Most of super high-end stuff seems to go through private perveyors. And it makes sense. A little store front, etc... in a nice area of NYC, Cali, Chi-town, etc...(where your chances of traffic are best) has to be atleast $100,000 a year.

Why bother, when you can do shows, have a website and still make decent money with little hassle.

Why bother

To address a specific market.

The English gun makers tried doing it in the 1940-1960's. 98% of them are gone or shells of their former selves.

The environmental realities, such as loss of empire and political unrest in Africa, plus growing anti-gun histeria at home, probably had more to do with that then the market.

I hope this isn't considered thread hijacking, but I thought I would offer some thoughts on what a real upscale knife establishment would look like (to me), rather than citing an existing example (as I've never seen one).

To my mind, a premium knife shop would cater to the mid-to high-end user, as well as collectors of production and custom knives. It would also cater to knife makers, stocking blade blanks, handle materials, tools, accessories, sheath making equipment, etc. Of course, knowledgeable staff would be a must. Ideally, a real high end shop would offer courses and tutorials in collaboration with local knife enthusiasts.

Additionally, It would be nice if you could test production blades prior to purchasing them. I'm not thinking of stress-testing a blade right out of the box, but rather setting aside a number of 'display' models, for supervised testing. It would be nice if you could try out a camp knife model by splitting some wood, or try out a new EDC by cutting a few bits of cardboard. An insurance nightmare, I know, but it would be nice nonetheless.

I've seen such shops for fishing, and even for firearms (to a very limited extent), but never for knives. Still, a man can dream, right?

I just spent half an hour drooling over the knives there. Especially the Jeff Harkins and Ralph Dewey Harris OTF autos. That's some amazing cutlery.

There are probably a handfull of very high end knife stores which cater exclusively to the wealthy collector. We will probably seldom see them advertise in the trade magazines, and they are usually located away from more visible high traffic areas. Who are these guys, which is the best of the best, and, what does one have to do to get on their mailing list?
