What is the point in an integral comp lock?

The same question can be asked of a frame lock. Remember, force may be linear and run down the length of the lock, but frame locks have a big cutout of the lockbar to make it possible to close the darn thing. Making the bar any thicker than that does nothing to increase strength, it just increases the size of the contact patch mated to the blade tang and, perhaps, increases comfort of the handle.

I can't imagine how much this beast could take. I would love to see it compared to a triad.

That's one of the stainless steel versions (obviously). I had one of the titanium ones for years. From the perspective of design and engineering, it was really interesting. As a user, it really didn't satisfy me at all. I don't think I'm alone, because it was discontinued quite a few years back. Spyderco does a lot of in-house testing. It would be interesting to know how the SS version compared to the Ti version in terms of lock failure.

I would think that the SS ATR and the Ti ATR would be close to identical in terms of lock strength. That's the beauty of the compression lock.

ALLHSS's black ATR looks gorgeous.

I find the ATR to be a great EDC. I don't know why it was discontinued. The blade geometry is excellent for hard use and fine cutting. And the blade pivots so smoothly that the compression lock is a dream to use.

What about it didn't satisfy you?

Wow, most of the first page of comments makes my head hurt :)

I'll say that it's probably partially due to cost (if you're making a Ti lock-side scale that is integral, you probably don't want to machine down just the arm on the lock-bar and leave the "tab" when you most likely want a slightly thicker scale in the first place).

And I would assume you'd want a thicker Ti scale on the lock-bar side for symmetry with the other scale (as many folks as we had griping about the Southard's lack of left/right symmetry, I can imagine how folks would react if they had a thick Ti or liner/G10 side and a super-thin lock-bar side).

Just about everything. :o I really disliked the cobra hood - had some unintended Emerson openings. :( And generally, I didn't particularly like the blade shape or the overall handling. I'm also tempted to say it seemed like a large, heavy knife, but I have lots of knives that are as large and/or as heavy, and they get a lot of carry time. Put it down to "some knives don't work for some people."
