What is the preferred safe way to vaccuum up the metal dust from belt & disc grinding

Hi Guys,
I have watched alot of videos where the knifemaker has a 3-4" black tube connected to something, they never show it , which sucks up some of the sparks and metal dust.
Can one just use a shop vac with a metal container, or does the exhaust release the dust it vaccuumed up?
Does one need a special collection system that filters the exhaust as well?
I am only a hobbyist, but also have a basement shop with limited fresh air openings, such as large doors and windows. ( and ceilings).

This is the search engine for Bladeforums. It will find info in older threads. The subject of dust collection is a constant one. Currently there are two or three threads running on this subject. Some have detailed photos and drawings of how to build a spark trap.
