What is the Purpose of a Blade Catch???

I hope I don't sound like an idiot by asking this question, but I am a gun guy who is not yet up to speed on all the knife lingo...So, what is the purpose of a blade catch? Is it just for looks?

It's originally for knife fighting but most use it as a bottle opener.

The only knife that I see available at the company store has the blade catch so that is why I ask. It just doesn't look right, kind of like a deformed sixth toe or something.

It was originally designed for swords--where it does work with swords like this

You will find NO ONE who is trained in Knife work who will tell you that the Yard Hook will work as a "Blade Catcher"..

Too small to work--

Try both of them(Guard and Hook) and get the one that feels good in your hand.

Either way you go the Uncle Mini Mojo, and the Mini Mojo are great knives. I like the looks of the hook so I went with it, just personal preference.

Yep, I never liked that look, either.

My Mr. Mofo (#36) with that slight recurve and the ground catch is my favorite blade and I couldn't wait for a model to come out at a lower price so that I could beat somethin' with one!!
