I don't understand the obsession with quintessential. Get what you like, not what everyone thinks you should have.

This is just a light hearted thread to have some fun, it's not meant to be taken seriously. Just interesting to see what the members of this board consider the "quintessential" knife of any serious collection for under $100.

I think a Spyderco Delica FFG and a Becker BK-2 are a really good all-around combination that cover pretty much just about anything I might run into. I can buy them both for not much over $100 total. Don't listen to these people telling you to be practical. Buy and trade as many knives as you possibly can in as short a time period as possible. This is the only way to ensure the sickness sets in well.

What about a full tang fixed blade knife? Which one is the quintessential knife that fits the < $100 limit? A couple of bucks over $100 is ok but it's gotta be no more than $10 over IMHO.

Of course the medium SAKs- small Tinker, Bantam, possibly the Cadet (don't have that one),... The Alox Solo is also a wonderful, classy knife; possibly my favorite knife ever.

This thread reads like a "Who is Who" of knives and the variety of "Quintessential" knives is very impressive. Some of these I haven't inquired into yet and some are very familiar to me.

One question though, are we keeping it roughly in the $100 and below price range? If we are adhering to the price range then I've gotta say that there are tons of great knives out there, for the serious collector, that are entirely affordable and that's really cool.

Let me add an older knife to the list: M Klein & Sons Electricians knife. It's basically a typical but high quality pocket knife with the secondary "blade" being a flat-head screwdriver. Nice workmanship, easy to find and can be had for under $100 so I think that it belongs in a more historical category of collector knives.
