So what is this knife all about. I notice it's missing some usual features I see on Busse Knives... What is this knife designed for? What are it's uses. What's the blade length on one? What about blade thickness?

SAR = Search and Rescue. My understanding is that it's meant to be a 5" utility bushcraft blade.

Some pics for you...

It's a great utility knife. As you can see from Guyon's pic, it's almost the same overall length of a BAIII but with much more usable edge.

Bushcraftiness huh? Wonderful... I bought a Mora recently and wasn't very happy with it. I wanted to get a bushcraft blade... Might as well make it the best and get a Busse. Thanks guys... I may to seriously consider one of these as my field knife for camping and wilderness treks. Much Appreciated.

if you don't like it, you can always resell it.

I, for one, would like to try one. Some people don't like the handle, some do love it.

I happen to love it.

just my unsolicited opinion.

I will further blaspheme and confess that it replaced my NO-e as my city bug-out-bag blade of choice....

May the HOGs forgive me but it's true.

Compact....indestructible.

ohhh...yaa.....

:D

From what I've learned from the knowledgable guys in the Wilderness and Survival forum... a regular finger guard gets in the way of a pure wilderness knife that is made for working with wood and doing bushcrafty things... I've always appreciated finger guards on my knives and choils but I can see the logic. It would make for a poor "Tactical" knife as any stabbing motion might be bad on your fingers (Or what's left of them)... but for a pure field and stream knife... the SAR5 might be perfect... I been wanting a Bushcraft Knife... and the more the design is geared towards that the better as it will allow me to see what's true and what's not about how important a knife of this type design can be in the wilderness. So, I'm looking forward to maybe trying one. If nothing else... it's a Busse, It'll outlast anything else. Maybe it's a little overbuilt for bushcraft... but that's the way I lik'em. It looks like a Nessmuk (Spelling) and a Typical Bushcraft knife had a kid and then fed it steroids.

Ya don't like the handle,,,,,,break out a sanding block a dowel and some sandpaper ,,,,,, and rub away till it's comfortable (why whine ? FIX IT)

We have similar taste in blades... I too love my NO-E. I don't think this will replace it... but it may become my new wilderness knife for sure. That and a good Axe or my FBM. Or all three LOL... I love steel. Maybe I'll just make a paracord leash and just drag every knife I own with me... That way, I'll always have the right knife the job.

Seriously though... I'm hoping the SAR5 plus my new HACK will make a nice little Bushcraft Team.

Oh if I get one... the coating is definitely coming off... That Busse coating is TOUGH... but it sure creates a lot of drag on the blade... It's like the knife has tires on it. Might do a little tweeking on the handle to.... but you're right... make the knife suite you... not the other way around.

I feel ya. I want to carry them all...all the time. :o

Next time I go out to the woods I am going to do something crazy...I'm gonna take only one knife!!!!!!!

It's gonna be the sar and we'll see how it does...:D

Can't wait.

I love the way that came out. I got my son a Pumpkin SAR for Christmas, I'm gone point him to your pics and see if he wants to strip his.

What is the SAR5 exactly ?????????? ,,,,,,, simple ,,,,,,,, A pretty much, indestructable, small fixed blade.....that I have'nt aquirred ,,,,,,,,, as YET.

The more pics I see of this one,,,,,the more I wanna break down and buy one,,,,,, or two :D

Of Course,,,,the only reason that stopped me before was the fact that I LIKE the choil. Seemed like something was missing. Guess it just reminded me of the apprentice knives

i just picked one up last week... its getting pants made for it right now and then i am thinking of stripping it..

there are a couple great threads with pics and how to instructions for modding the SAR5

question for the senior HOGs....if you buy it on the secondary market are you bound by the boss man's "no complaints" contract????

I thought you would want serrations in a SAR knife for cutting through webbing, cordage, etc. The front guard hole is weirdly placed. It looks like it would weaken the knife, but I know Busse's are indestructable and that won't be the case....but it looks weird nonetheless. Lastly, not that the SAR is made for stabbing or thrusting, but if you did. Without the choil or front guard hole, it looks like your hand would simply slip forward and get gashed. I know everyone will say naw, no. I think a Satin Jac would make a better SAR knife.

Just while this thread is up and running i'll throw this question in there:

Has anyone skeletonized or tapered the tang on their SAR5?

The one complaint for me is the balance point is way too far in the handle, I prefer a neutral or slightly blade heavy blade and was going to try adjusting my SAR5 to this. Other than that I find it a great knife.

I thought the same thing... And I have accidentally slipped and were it not for a finger guard I might have cut myself pretty bad... but from my understanding... A true wilderness knife isn't a tool that you're gonna find yourself stabbing with... A survival knife... maybe... but the two are different. A true wilderness knife will find itself doing bush work, cleaning game, and making traps and snares and such... so there will never be a real need to stab. I've enver found that a guard keeps a knife from performing the tasks adequately... but outdoorsman much more skilled and long in the tooth than I say that a knife without such makes for a better TOOL... not weapon... But Tool. So I think the SAR5 might just be designed well as a bush tool... but it would probably make a poor weapon. For the very reason you mentioned... I have pleanty of knives that could double as a weapon if need be (Of course I prefer a gun LOL) but the SAR5 I think is gonna fall into that wilderness tool only category. That's the main reason I asked what it's design purpose was because from the first time I saw it... I thought... Bushcraft Knife.

That's really hot... is that Micarta or G-10. I love the orange but I've never been able to get on board with G-10. I like the texture and feel of Micarta. I know G-10 is just about element proof... but it feels Too synthetic to me. I like the way micarta will draw the sweat from my hand... and I like the way it looks after being soaked with sweat, grease, oil, and dirt... it gets a patina and looks like a knife that has been places.

I also love the square bottom on the knife... so that you could hammer it into something if you needed to... say to use as sort of a chisel or wedge on wood.
