I was talking with a friend last night and he asked me which custom maker had the smoothest action. I really thought about it for awhile and I just don't know. What is the slickest action you've seen on a custom folder lately?

1. Larry Chew
2. Older Emerson CQC6
3. Kit Carson Model 4

Just my thoughts and playing with what I could get my hands on for comparisons..

Regards,

Ed

#1: Chew (his knives indeed have a "buttery" opening/closing feeling)

#2: Carson and DDR (what a tie)

Larry Davidson...I haven't handled a Chew but I guess it equates to the same thing.

The Chew VooDoo bearings in both Larry Chew and Larry Davidson's knives are excellent.

Phil Boguzwski (I know...the spelling is wrong :() makes an awesome folder without the use of a ball bearing system. Just precision machining and phosphor bronze washers/bushings. Simply an engineering marvel! :)

Michael J. Smith. It is so smooth, you think that if you hold it upside down, the blade is going to fall right out...but it never does:)

For me it's a Pat and Wes Crawford/Bob Kasper Ti Folding Fighter with Devin Thomas Firestorm damascus. The action is nothing fancy, just great tolerances and huge bronze washers. You'd think the pivot was loose and in dire need of tighening, but when locked, everything is rock solid! Just look to the left at my avitar, thats the animal in question, just look at how smooth it is! It opens all by itself!!!!

My Carson M4 is smooth as silk, but this one is even smoother.

And some people wonder why I carry both. ;)

Stan Fujisaka is *about* as smooth as PhilL's Art Washburn.

We'll have to do the blindfold test someday. ;)

Wow Phil and Blade747, those are nice!!!

Well, out of what I have handled, owned or played with (a lot), I would say that Darrel Ralph (he makes some of my favorites -- great knives), Kit Carson and Phil Boguszewski make some really nice stuff (there are a ton of other great makers though). I have heard good things about Larry Chews knives (and others that are similar), I just wish I could get my hands on one!!!

My smoothest folder is a large J.W. Smith with a recurved blade. Just a slight flick makes the blade fly! It is faster than an assisted opening knife.

1. Phil Boguszewski,Titanium Wegner
2. Kit Carson, M16
3.Darrel Ralph,EDC
That's a tight one to call.

Brad Duncan's knives with his bearing system are just unreal. The blade practically floats open.

Phil Boguszewski's folders are a close second.

The smoothest action that I have personally had the pleasure of experiencing was with the DDR Madd Maxx. This knife was as smooth as silk.

mitch is correct..
without a doubt..it is the COBRA by phil b.
nothing, i mean nothing is as smooth as the action on that knife..it is absolutely amazing...

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of handling a couple of Andrew McLurkin's knives. While I am kicking myself today for not having the dough to pick one up, I must say that I haven't felt a smoother opening blade. But I did manage to score a NIB Ralph D2 EDC and it should be arriving any day now!! So I'm am hoping this will be my new dream boat.
