What is the step you positively hate?

I have two things that get the :barf: reaction from me.

Fitting guards and sheath making.:barf:

Fitting a guard is something I avoid if possible. I hate it so much I'm seriously considering forging integrals even though I've never done that before.

Making sheaths used to be something I didn't mind so much but in the last few months it's become more of a time consuming PITA. I find myself putting it off more and more. Let's see, last time it was time to make one I decided to clean my shop instead.

The step I hate most is the step I take out my shop door and trip over something and smack my squash on the driveway. It hurts! Other than that I love doing anything with my hands.

Drilling handle pin holes in the tang, well for that matter, the whole fit and finish process for me is pretty tedious. I would rather be making damascus, grinding the knife, or Heat Treating.

Hey could I contract any of you guys to do my assembly work and final finish? ;) :D ;)

Well you could always make just the blades and sell them. There is a pretty good market for finished damascus blades for those just starting out. Or you could just make damascus.

I don't like the part of getting in the groove of doing ANYTHING and then finding out I need something, such as pin stock, to continue on.

Misque, I'd probably agree with you, except that I farm out sheath making to someone else. ;)

Well, two someone else's, depending on whether it's leather or kydex.

Actually you all are going to probably hate me for this, but I dont really hate any part of putting a knife together. Some tasks are more tedious than others, filing and hand finishing, but I love seeing one come together. Probably just me.

for those of you who hate cutting the blade from the stock why dont you try using a hand grinder with a cut off disc you can get cut off disc s from a hard ware store like lowes.

oh ya i hate trying to get the lock notch and lock bar to go right on my folding knives but this is only my second so as was once said "try to learn from your mistakes so they dont happen again!"

I dont like to clean the shop and I dont like to make the same knife more than once. And I dont like messing up a $100 piece of ivory.

As a hacksaw I found the Sandvik to be very, very good. Excellent compromise between lightness to avoid tiring the arm and weight to avoid the blade getting stuck.
Well, I don't really like cleaning up, but it's a sore necessity for me, what with not having a proper vacuum plant (I have to vacuum clean everything AFTER finishing) and having my reloading equipment in the same 15'x8' room my knife equipment is in... and anyway don't mind it as much as cutting the damn blanks! :barf:

I love knife/puukko making but there is some things I do not like so much...
-cleaning the work shop.
-blade warping.
-making the sheaths, (traditional Finnish sheaths can be a pain in the ass some times).
-selling my Puukko's or knives, I would like to keep them all but I cant since I need bit of money to make more knives.
-lack of time.

I hate grinding the scale of damascus billets after forging. Aside from that, I love it. Even guards.

Oh yeah Bruce, what Roger said.;)

cleaning and putting things back in it's place SUCKs
I need a helper:) and having to do other things
other than making knives sucks too.:( :)
and <having> to sell them, I wish I could keep them all
:)

I had to think way too long for this one. At first many tedious and miniscule tasks came to mind, then I realized, I like making blades. It takes all of those tasks to get there. Though some are harder than others I won't let myself hate any of it. Making blades is that "getaway" for me, that piece of calm when other things leave me wondering.

The Lord comes first, then the family, then making blades (a close tie with using blades in the field). Now if you want to talk about work, that primary vocation....

I dislike the tedium of slowly bandsawing the blade blank. What I hate is trying to keep the workshop clean. I can't seem to do it as I go, I mess up the place then have to set aside 20minutes to clear up the whole bloody place after I finish the knife (thats if I haven't lost something by then).Guards were a real pain, but now that I'm getting a good tight solderless fit - its much more rewarding.

Another thing I hate - throwing anything away. I have a vast collection of pretty much useless pieces of woods, tiny portions of offcut steel, ivory, Micarta, MOP etc. that I am absolutely convinced is PRECIOUS and could somehow be used somewhere someday !! Jason.

Yeah, but my aprentice is in training. Long training session actually... he's only 4 months old.

Thank god he looks like his mother!!!
:D

Cutting Blanks!? I must be weird - I like that part.

I rough cut and then use a 36 grit belt - feels like a high speed sculpter.

Jay that baby is really cute - ummm, er - manly, not cute manly, looks like his mother, but manly.

What a bunch of heart ache and joy you have ahead. God Bless you all.

Makin' knives and shapin' lives - life can be good.

But what do I hate? Seems like whatever I have to do next, until I start, then somehow it becomes fun.
