What is the story with the "new" Tanker Gray on the NMFSH's???

OK, so I've mentioned this already (and so have a few other folks), but the "new" Tanker Gray on the NMFSH's is not the same as the "old" on the TGLB and Swamp Rat Rucki. Not necessarily that this is a bad thing, but it is quite a bit different, and it would have been nice to know ahead of time.

On my CGNMFSH, the "new" Tanker is much darker, and in my humble opinion, not really very gray at all. :foot: On mine, the closest color I can come up to say what it looks like is somewhere between OD and brown. At first, I thought it was the unnatural indoor lighting. However, I've had it outside in the full sun today and it still doesn't look like any shade of gray I've ever seen (fwiw, my wife and dad agree). The other odd thing is the pearlescent flecks I'm seeing in mine. This coating has a lot of green, purple, pink, and blue sparkly reflections in it out in the sun (no, I wasn't drunk...). My wife muttered something under her breath about unicorns!  It reminds me very much of some of the pearlescent automotive paints I've seen (it would be interesting to get a clear-coat over this and see how it looks), and the flat spine in between the handle slabs really show a lot of it near the edges. I tried today, and it was impossible to get this pearlescence to show up well enough to see in a picture (the flecks are really small).

Here is a picture (not mine) which was posted in the NMFSH pics thread that shows the new and old Tanker Gray together.

You can easily see the difference here. On a calibrated monitor, you can see a brownish tint near the ricasso of his CGNMFSH. It is not that this new color is necessarily bad, it is just quite a bit different and doesn't look as good with my yellow and black scales as the old color would have (of course, this is my opinion and is subjective). Given the difference, I may just go ahead and strip my coated model and give it a nice satin finish with some scotch brite and actually use it (seems like a perfect job for the "very fine" blue 1"x30" belt I just got...). ;)

If mine actually looked dark gray like it does in the pic I took below (while drunk, btw), I don't think I would care so much, but it has a much browner, rainbow sparkly look in hand. I just don't know what to think about it. :o

Anyway, I haven't called the shop yet to ask them about this (I'm not even sure what I'm going to do yet), but I am curious if any of the Busse folks have some info that they'd like to share here. I'm just curious why the change? What do other folks who got this new Tanker Gray color think? I'm just curious if I'm alone in this, or if other are seeing this color the same way mine looks? TIA! :D

PS - I am LOVING these NMFSH's!!! The fusion grips are a LOT more comfortable than I had expected! They fit my hands quite well. I'm a fan of the 5/16" stock with the full-flat grind too! Great design!!! :D

Perhaps they were concerned that the old tanker gray was too similar to the double-cut finish.

Looks Great!!!!

I really like the new version. I'm sure just like anything else, all the tan handles are not the same tan. All snake skin isn't created equal. The green linen had huge variations. Just go with it and enjoy it for the steel beneath the coating.....remember, it's what's on the inside that counts

I'm hoping there are some saber grind 5/16ths versions of these released!!!!!

I like the new look a a lot. I ended up getting a TG/bruiser and it looks sick!

Great pic comparison. I too ordered my CG NMFSH in tanker gray based on the color my TGLB was. I don't mind the new gray, in fact I think I really like it but it's more of a brown sparkly color.

Yes, thank you!!! That's just it; to me, it just doesn't look gray at all.

I don't necessarily dislike this new color, but personally I wouldn't call it gray, and unfortunately I don't think it looks all that great with the yellow and black handles I ordered. Oh well, I can strip it if necessary.

I've also noticed that this coating seems to be pretty thin compared to the others I've experienced. Seems even thinner than the Jungle Green.

I have a tanker gray NMFSHCG coming to me. I'll post pics to see how the color looks. I hope it's unicorn!!

LMAO! :D It is decreed: we shall call this "new" Tanker Gray color "Unicorn Brown"!!! :D :D :D  ;)

It's probably a different paint supplier. Ugh. Colour matching things is the bane of my existense as a graphic artist. Everyone has a different idea of what colours are. Some colours are very hard to reproduce consistenly, grey being one of them. But to be technical, grey isn't actually a colour. It is a shade of white. Or a tint of black if you will. Absolute colourless greys can appear brownish, especially when compared directly with coloured things or other greys that are usually slighty blue. Judging by your pics, the older grey looks bluish and the new one looks more accurate as a true grey. I had a TG with the older grey, and it had a blue shade in it. The pearlescent flecks you are seeing could be anything from residue in a dirty spraygun to the fact that the pigment is truely colourless and it is reflecting/refracting the light around it.

Interesting point there, and it certainly could be due to a different powder coat supplier (likely in fact).

Today out in the sun, I tried laying the knife on other objects trying to get a reasonable color match (trying to prove to myself that I'm not just seeing things). As I said, the color I am seeing resembles something between OD and brown. Honestly, based on the recent Tanker Gray offerings (SR Rucki and TGLB), I did expect something more bluish tinted, and for that reason I came very close to ordering the bruiser handles on the CG version (that combo looks great on the TGLB imo).

I don't think the iridescent reflections I am seeing are from a dirty gun, as overall they are pretty even on the blade (with the exception of the spine of the handle), unless it was really dirty. However, giving some thought to what you have said, it could be something weird with the pigments or maybe they are metaillic flecks in the paint to give a truer gray color? I have noticed this evening that it does have a very different look under indirect lighting. Hmm.

Busse needs to come out with a "50 shades of grey" line. One shade being battle unicorn of course!!! Battle Unicorn FTW!!!!

Some years ago I used to work as a painter, there would be color variations with the same chart color in the same paint brand... Big PITA on the outside wall of 10 level building...

Bumping this up to see if one of the Busse employees might be willing to chime in? Here is another example of the old/new Tanker Gray color just posted by <Flux>:

Even in the soft lighting, the brownish hue is showing up. I'm definitely in the camp that likes the older Tanker Gray color better. The new one just doesn't look all that great with the yellow/black handles imo. :o

The new finish is much more durable, at the start of using my TGLB the finish chipped near the edge but on the FSH it does not.

Interesting. I did note that it seems thinner than the old Tanker I've seen.
