I own quite a few knives that I use on a regular basis but never saw the use for knives in the 6-7'' range... For me knives with blades 3'' and less are great EDC, 4-5'' are good hiking/camping/bushcraft. If I need a serious chopper I want a blade 8'' and more...
It looks to me like the 6-7'' range is more of a compromise with no dedicated function.
Am I missing something ?
Why do you guys own knives of that size ?
Thanks

It seems to me that the uses you describe only apply to EDC and outdoor recreational use. There are many other types of activities that a knife user might do. There are many knives dedicated to hunting, fishing, tactical and fighting use, military, survival, cooking and kitchen, etc that require dimensions and attributes different than the ones you describe.

While I agree that my GO-TO sizes generally coincide with yours, I know there are many other users out there who's knife use requires that their knives be different than mine.

For you....

It's all personal preference

In a word "Meat", what knives were meant for to start with....;) A lot of boning and break down knives are in that size range..

It's a good compromise size... Not great at anything but can do it all ok. It's a one knife solution when space and weight are at a premium.

Well that’s about the size I prefer for use against people. It’s a good size for a weapon oriented blade.

In the field you may be dropped from height (copter, rock etc...) , swipe away by river, get lost one or other way. Best tool you may attach to you body and keep it always with you is knife, which can be use with more or less success as a weapon, as cutting, chopping tool, prying spear (attached to stck), hammer, machete, anchor etc... A lot of things can be done with knife, even if it would not be best tool for some jobs. But you can not walk through the forest with chainsaw attached to you. 6-7" knife seems to be good compromise to be universal, to be used to many different tasks ad so it is optimal as emergency tool.

It may be less then 5" for most use - except for fight with human or animal. In a fight 6-7" seems to have better reach for vital organs through wear/hide for common opponents - human, wolf, bear, boar, mountain lion, with good control for manipulations for untrained for knife fight person.

Thanks, Vassili.
