What's the function of the wave on Emerson knives? I think it's ugly as all get-out. Is it a bottle cap opener?

When you pull the knife out of your pocket, the Wave snags the corner of your pocket and the blade opens itself. Just look it up on youtube and you'll find countless videos of people demonstrating this.

I am not a wave user so this is not an expert answer. It is used to open the knife as you pull it from your pocket by catching the edge of your pocket.

Not my video, just one I found on youtube, but it gives a good example of how the Wave is used. Hope it helps!

All these answers are correct, you may find it ugly but it does have a function. Created by Emerson 2 popular spydercos have it under license, the endure and the delica, both excellent knives. The wave does tend to tear at the pocket over time so if you don't rotate your edc knife you may want to rotate your edc pants.

But yes it DOES work well as an impromptu bottle opener--perhaps THAT would change your perspective! Not so ugly after it opens a brew now, is it! :-)

It's for pulling the fingernails of people who complain about how stupid it is.

In all seriousness it is a useful function, but to each their own. Originally intended as a blade catch, it just happens to open when you pull the knife out of your pocket in the correct fashion.

Plus, you can open beer bottles with it.

Its that thing you do during a ball game. You know when a bunch of people get up in sequential order and it looks like a water wave...

Oh and its used on knives too

The wave was originally intended to be used to stop/trap an opponents knife in a fight. Ernest Emmerson later, by mistake, discovered it can be used to open the knife as well...

Let me tell you... when you are at an ATM in a dodgey part of town.... there's nothing like having one hand on the ass end of a waved knife in your pocket while your other hand is inputting your pin code. It's like a warm blanket for me :D

Got that right; nothing as comforting as having a waved folding knife in your pocket whilst standing in the dark at an ATM in the dodgy section of town.

I am a bit more secure with my gun, much better than a knife! Waved knives are pretty cool though.

P'Kal too.

When the patent on the wave expires they will become as common as any other one handed opening device.

Thanks All!!! Now I understand what it does. I thought it was a bottle cap opener!!!! LOL!!
