What is "the Wave"? (I'm not talking about a multi-tool; I'm talking about a way of opening a folder.)

Go to www.emersonknives.com and check out the Commander.
You can also do a search on the Commander on the forums.
My understanding is that the Wave assists opening as it catches on the pocket when you withdraw the knife so that as the knife is completely removed from your pocket the knife is in the fully opened and locked position.
As always, I defer to the voice of greater experience.

Scarman about covered it...The Wave is a hook like projection on the back of the knife near the pivot. When you withdraw the knife from your pocker, waistband, whatever, the Wave catchs the material and opens the blade. A thumb stud is also present for alterate opening as well. I have the Emerson Commander (the only blade w/ a Wave that I know of) and this is probably its best feature.....great for rapid deployment of the knife.

I doubt you will see the "Wave" on any other knife. I think Mr. Emerson has a patent on the device. Which is a bummer, cause I would love to have a "Wave" equipped Axis Lock knife.

So what's to prevent someone from making a sheath that yanks a blade open as you deploy a standard thumbstud blade?

Some kind of spring-wire catch that holds the thumbstud with force that increases as the knife clears the sheath, to the point where it pulls the blade open and releases when the blade is fully engaged.

The idea is sorta like when a thumbstud gets tangled in the pocket and an errant thread yanks the blade open during the draw, and breaks when the blade is clear.

Nothing to prevent mechanisms like that, and there are several already on the market for common folders like the Buck 110. Trouble is, that's a sheath, so you're already talking about a level up in terms of carryability and social acceptance - I'd take a fixed-blade at that point. Also, MA law specifically prohibits devices of this nature. Go figure. I have some ideas, though...
