What is this finish/etch?

looks like a ferric chloride etch to me... but I could be wrong.

If it is, I'm missing that process. Normally, I would just submerge the blade in diluted FeCl3 to etch, but it looks like he paints something on, then somehow rusts the blade... then it looks like a sketchy hot vinegar etch?

I like the end result, but I'm not getting how he go there.

Looks like he covered his makers mark with nail polish then etched the blade with an acid (possibly vinegar) then boiled it. Lots of metal etched off that blade.

That's what I was thinking. Being that deep isn't it more prone to problems later? Rust?

I'm watching his other videos, some interesting things...

he says in a comment that it involves vinegar, salt, and bleach...

I have done this before. What he is doing is throwing on a thick uneven coat of gun blue. Let it dry but dont touch it or wipe it, then soak the blade in bleach. Time varies depending on depth desired. the bleach reacts with the gun blue and eats the steel away just like what is shown in the video. If you plan to try it, try it outside.
