I posed this question in another thread. Identify this tool and I'll send you a copy of the book about my great grandfather George Schrade.

Hint: there is a modern day equivalent in every knife makers shop.tool.jpg

Your clue makes it harder not easier. :)

wedge lock "vice-grips". My last guess.

It's obviously a clothespin for hanging out your suit of armor on the line to dry after washin' it in the creek.

You got it Ron. Early version of the Vise Grip. That would stump guys all day at the shows.

The tang is inserted in the short end and a wood wedge is inserted in the long end to hold the blade while grinding.

PM me with your address and I'll send you the book.

Congrats,
Bill

I agree, thank you for extending your offer to us both. It is generous of you.

So then, this tool was really important for grinding the small blades for the folders?

I was going to guess it was a wedge lock something or other too !
Perhaps if the wedge was pictured with it I might have ventured a guess.
Next time I wont be so timid !

I have a few of these made from wood... you can make one up quickly from a clothespin to hold small parts.

this shows one, scroll down a few projects http://www.lopacki.com/tips/

Cool contest and thanks for sharing the pic!

Ha! What a cool and generous thing to do William!!!

I still like the armor clothes pin idea though. ;) :D

Bo, those little pen blades were tough to hold while grinding. That tool measures 4 3/8" long and has quite a grip. I also have his hand vise but feels a little heavy for those small blades.

Sorry no old pictures of it in use.

I displayed it on my table at a show for 2 days and nobody could venture a guess. You Blade Forum guys are sharp dudes.

Thanks for your comments.

Thanks for sharing your interesting knowledge and picture with us. What a wonderful gesture.
