What is this?

Looks like a crack or cold shut to me. If that is a forged knife I would say the latter. If that was one of my knives I would be horrified and would do just about anything to get it out of circulation. I would rather make sure it is right than have something out there sub par. There are a couple of knives from way back (20 years ago now) that I would love to get back..If I ever get the chance.......

Thanks everyone for the comments, I am in agreement regarding a maker wanting to make it right regardless of who owns it. I am sure the maker is a good guy, I have not met him personally but he has a lot going on. I think he just doesn't want to deal with second hand owners, and I know he doesn't want to make a replacement knife.

I may contact the original owner and see if he is willing to take the knife back and approach him for a solution.

I guess this is a good example of how important it is to research the maker of your knife. I would have hated to buy a custom knife on the second hand market and then not have the maker stand behind it. Personally, just because they are busy is no excuse for poor customer service. Really makes you think before laying down a lot of $$$ for a used knife.

It gives me a perverse kind of encouragement to hear that you can become well known as a maker without the basics: I.E. being interested in how your blades hold up over time...

Before you all get get too down on the maker, you should realize that we are commenting blind here.

We don't know who the maker is, and we don't know anything about the knife beyond a tiny photo.

Some info would be a good idea.
Who made it? Without knowing the maker, we don't know if this was made by someone who thinks they are famous, or someone who is. If it is a $2000 recent Bruce Bump knife, then we have good reason to be surprised. If it is a $50 "Joe the Blacksmith" knife made ten years ago, and now on its second to fifth owner....that is another thing.

Is the blade forged from a leaf spring, or 15N20 bar stock,.....or ground from either of those?

What is the history of the knife? Was it rusted beyond belief and then sanded bright again ( and this is a deep rust line)?....Or has this mark bee there for all its life? Why hasn't anyone complained about it before now?

I will move this to ATG for now, because it isn't a shop talk subject.

Stacy, out of curiosity, why is this not considered a shop talk subject? Is it because the question has been answered and the topic has veered to the maker's personal qualities? If the original post isn't a shop talk subject, then I guess I don't really know what shop talk is about.

It was not a shop talk thread because it was mainly a complaint thread about a maker and a knife. There are other places for that. As to what makes a Shop Talk thread a Shop Talk thread, it is at the top of the forum page:

Forum: Shop Talk - BladeSmith Questions and Answers
The art of knife making- advice on methods, supplies, and materials

Also, anything posted here will only be visible to paid members.

I guess you and I just read the original post differently, though the thread replies did veer from course a bit.

It's been fun! Peace out

There are a few things that may have happened and I do have to say it reminds me of cold shuts I have seen in Damascus.

Drip of sweat on the blade... sheathed, sweat runs into the hand rubbed finish and eats away at a sandng line? the spot is what makes me wonder

I have iron bacteria in my well water. Once I sheathed a knife and didn't have it well oiled, there was a drop of water on it... sat overnight and had a good enough dent in the blade from the water droplet that it had to be refinished.

Just guesses!

I was going to let this go... but I find Stacy very overbearing in offensive with is Text Size and Color use! If you... Stacy had read the original post I did not complain about the maker or the knife.

This is you trying to make it about the maker...

Please quote something from my original Post that complains about the maker or the knife!

Thank you Daniel and others that understand what I was looking for by posting this thread up, I was not complaining about a maker (I would have named names if that were the case). While I don't have the same attitude or approach to customer service regarding the knives I sell. I don't tell people how to run their business, I look up to this maker and he is not "Joe the Blacksmith" his knives sell for $400 - $1k on a regular basis!

I am closing this thread because having it sit in ATG will not help me determine.... WHAT THE CRACK IS!
