What is this?

Probably just some kind of oil. You can use Tung oil, Danish oil, Tru-Oil, Linseed oil, Arrow oil or a number of other things to finish the wood. Oils will tend to bring out the figure in the grain of the wood and you can touch up the finish by wiping on another coat of oil.

Wearing a ring while using machinery is not smart !!
Quenching into a plastic container is not smart !!

I doubt the ammo can he edge quenched in was plastic. The plastic water bottle was what he etched in the caption said ferric. Chris Roberts

Yes oil.

Yup. You're right. Not sure why I thought that blade was hot...

My bad.

Anyway, tung oil, Danish oil, tru-oil... All produce similar results.

I bet it or the ferric was warm there was some steam or vapor. Steel will etch a bit quicker when warm right. Chris Roberts

Yeah, I thought the blade was smoking, but it appears it was the FeCl that was smoking. Still, FeCl in a PET bottle isn't the best idea. It should be glass or HDPE.
