what kind of equipment is used to regrind a knife blade? either from the edge and maybe 3/4 up, or all the way to the spine.

I bet some kind of belt grinder is used for this, but what grit should the belt be? how do you know how much grinding you can do before the blade overheats?

For occasional regrinds sandpaper in the P120-700 grit range will do as well. Apply a light touch, especially with fresh coarse grits.

i use a belt sander that i set up to wet grind so i can grind all day and not heat up a blade. i never go over 400 grit.

Yes, a belt grinder with a 8-10" wheel. Depending on how much you want removed, I usually start with 120 grit and work all the way up to 800 grit depending on the desired finish. Work slow and keep water handy. DM
