What is your buying and owning knife philosophy?

I have my knives stored in boxes and rotate my EDC almost daily. I only have one safe queen which is the 2012 limited edition Damascus Soldiers knife from Victorinox. A gorgeous piece imo. I even keep that stored in the dark so the wood won't change color.

I just recently surpassed 100 knives in my collection, with most of them purchased in just the past few years, and the rest dating back to the late `80s. I was always fascinated by the tanto design, so I have quite a few tanto variations, but everything else is fairly random. In theory, all but a few of my knives would serve my usage purposes, but I don't necessarily feel a need to justify a knife purchase with plans of actually using that knife for EDC, outdoor tasks or defending myself against alien abduction. If I like how it looks and am confident that it could stand up to my modest cutting needs, then better steel and workmanship are just icing on the cake. The knives I use most often have a collective value of a whopping $65 . . . spread across five knives. I don't think I could justify any of my knife purchases beyond those five if a genuine need had to be established.

Wow! I have never seen one of those before... Very cool Vic!!!

Now, as for me and my knife habits go. I now mostly own Hinderer, they are my favorite! Just something about them I can't get enough of, very addicting!! I also own CRK, Emerson, Curtiss, BM, Spyderco, Bark River. I carry and use them all. I have a hard time keeping them if I'm not going to use them. And there is nothing wrong with people not using them either. To each there own, right :) As long as the knife appeals to me and looks to carriy good, then I have no problem buying/using them. But I do like to try different types and models. That's what makes this hobby so much fun, along with sharpening them.

But just a little side note... I used to think $30 and $50 dollars was expensive for a knife, boy was I wrong!!!

What are you general knife buying habits?

If I like it and can afford it ... I'll buy it!
Like the internet teaches us: Because I can :D

For example, do you have a couple knives you actually use and pack the rest away in their boxes, or do you have at least a large percentage of knives that you actually rotate out carrying or using?

I carry/use all my knives. Some more often than others though. If I never use it it goes away, I sell it or give it to someone who might appreciate it more than I do.

Do you own only one brand primarily, lean towards one brand, or generally own a roughly equal amount of a few brands, same with using, do you use primarily one brand, or do a few brands end up in the rotation?

I am open to all patterns, brands, styles, etc. while I am honing my preferences ;)

Do you like to own a large variance in knife configurations. eg you own a frame lock large knife so you buy a small back lock. O rdo you primarily buy knives that suit your preference, eg most knives are frame locks if you prefer a framelock.

See above ;)

I have bought/sold/traded about 150 knives over the past 2 yrs. I enjoy CRK, Spyderco and Strider.
I carry a CRK Zaan. Every day, my Zaan. I do enjoy large Sebbies also, although I find that I don't carry them. My smoothest CRK, a large Classic Sebenza model, got sold in a fit of anxiety. I still miss that one.
I do think that the Sebenza is the finest knife south of $750 to be found. I've had 20 or 30 of them, in small and large, slab-sided and inlaid and various graphics models, but settle on the slab-sided Sebbie. And yes, I carry a Zaan. I won't try to explain that one...

My philosophy is simple: I buy what I like. It's the what I like that is all over the place. :) Currently, I REALLY like Spyderco Millies. I have about 10. Interestingly, not one is a G-10 S30v model. I like the sprint runs in the different steels. I have BG42, M4, S90V, and others. I'm also rekindling my love affair with CRK. I'm loving my Sebbie 25, and have carried it for a whole week. That's a long time for me to carry one knife without changing out. I rotate that often. My main favorites are: Hinderer, CRK, and a Millie of some flavor.

I don't think I've ever had a particular philosophy - it's usually been want-based with a bit of practicality peppered in. My wife recently bought me a Spyderco Dragonfly2 H1, and that knife has completely redefined my knife buying philosophy. It's a knife that I would have never bought myself because it wasn't big, over-built, and/or "scary" looking. Not that I don't like big, overbuilt, "scary" knives. But I have begun appreciating different types of knives now because I own that Spydie.

I have a lot of custom hunting knives that I bought with no intention of ever using them- just looking at them occasionally is enough.

I have more recently bought a lot of production folding knives and basically intend them all for carry. I have a rotation of EDC knives for weekdays, and some that I use for weekends or other purposes.
